He founded, in 1971, the recognized independent record label Ayuí/Tacuabé in order to promote and support valuable Uruguayan musical expressions, along with other musicians like José "Pepe" Guerra, Braulio López, Coriún Aharonián, Myriam Dibarboure, María Teresa Sande and Edgardo Bello,
He has performed the works of Cuban Nueva Trova stars Silvio Rodríguez and Pablo Milanés and Brazil's Chico Buarque and Edu Lobo and has worked with Cuban composer and arranger Leo Brouwer. His recordings are widely available, especially "Trópicos" (1972).
Viglietti was imprisoned in 1972 by his own government. He was supported by the likes of Jean-Paul Sartre as an international man of conscience, a voice for peace, and an opponent of the fascism and tyranny that plagued South America in the 1970s. Rumors about possible mistreatment against him forced the authorities to bring him out in front of television cameras to show that, in particular, his hands were fine. However, Viglietti spoke out that his treatment in police custody was much better than what other political prisoners received. He was a peer of the late Chilean poet and folk singer Victor Jara and composer and activist Violeta Parra.

Y sin embargo qué cerca
O es que existe un territorio
Donde las sangres se mezclan
Tanta distancia y camino
Tan diferentes banderas
Y la pobreza es la misma
Yo quiero romper mi mapa
Formar el mapa de todos
Mestizos, negros y blancos
The lyrics of Daniel Viglietti's song "Milonga de Andar Lejos" reflect a deep sense of longing and connection to one's homeland despite physical distance. The opening lines, "Qué lejos está mi tierra / Y sin embargo qué cerca / O es que existe un territorio / Donde las sangres se mezclan" evoke a complex and layered understanding of the concept of home. The mention of blood mixing suggests a shared heritage despite cultural differences and physical separation.
The artist laments the distance and divergent paths taken by different people, yet underscores how poverty is a universal experience that transcends borders and flags. This universal struggle unites people from different walks of life, highlighting the shared humanity that binds them together. The lines "Y la pobreza es la misma / Los mismos hombres esperan" speak to the common struggles faced by people regardless of nationality.
Viglietti advocates for a reimagining of traditional maps that divide people based on race and ethnicity, aspiring to create a new map that celebrates diversity and unity. The desire to portray a map that includes mestizos, negros, and blancos standing shoulder to shoulder signifies a call for solidarity and inclusivity. By viewing rivers as veins and the earth's color as the blood of the fallen, the artist emphasizes the interconnectedness of all living things.
The lyrics challenge the notion of who truly are the outsiders and foreigners, asserting that it is the merchants and exploiters who are the true strangers in this world. The plea for collective action and unity in the lines "Yo quiero romper la vida / Como cambiarla quisiera ayudeme compañero / Ayudeme, no demore que una gota con ser poco / Con otra se hace aguacero" underscores the power of unity in enacting positive change. The artist urges for cooperation and collaboration to bring about transformative societal shifts, emphasizing the cumulative impact of small individual efforts coming together.
