He has scored the majority of the films for his long-time friend Tim Burton.

Born in Los Angeles, he entered the film industry in 1976, initially as an actor. He made his film scoring debut in 1980 for the film Forbidden Zone directed by his older brother Richard Elfman. He has since been nominated for four Academy Awards and won a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media for Tim Burton's Batman and an Emmy Award for his Desperate Housewives theme. Elfman was honored with the prestigious Richard Kirk award at the 2002 BMI Film and TV Awards. The award is given annually to a composer who has made significant contributions to film and television music.

He is the son of novelist Blossom Elfman and the brother of director Richard Elfman.

Elfman was born in Los Angeles, California, the son of Blossom Elfman (née Bernstein), a writer and teacher, and Milton Elfman, a community in the Baldwin Hills area of Los Angeles. He spent much of his time in the local movie theatre, adoring the music of such film composers as Bernard Herrmann and Franz Waxman.

Stating that he hung out with the "band nerds" in high school, he started a ska band. After dropping out of high school, he followed his brother Richard to France, where he performed with Le Grand Magic Circus, an avant-garde musical theater group. Violin in tow, Elfman next journeyed to Africa where he traveled through Ghana, Mali, and Upper Volta, absorbing new musical styles, including the Ghanaian highlife genre which would eventually influence his own music. Elfman contracted malaria during his one-year stay and was often sick. Eventually he returned home to the United States, where he began to take Balinese music lessons at the CalArts. He was never officially a student at the institute, nonetheless, the instructor encouraged him to continue learning. Elfman stated, "He just laughed, and said, 'Sit. Play.' I continued to sit and play for a couple years." At this time, his brother was forming a new musical theater group, The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo. The group performed the music for Richard's debut feature film, Forbidden Zone. Danny Elfman composed his first score for the film and played the role of Satan. By the time the movie was completed, they had taken the name Oingo Boingo and begun recording and touring as a rock group.

In 1985, Tim Burton and Paul Reubens invited Elfman to write the score for their first feature film, Pee-wee's Big Adventure. Elfman was apprehensive at first because of his lack of formal training, but with orchestration assistance from Oingo Boingo guitarist and arranger Steve Bartek, he achieved his goal of emulating the mood of such composers as Nino Rota and Bernard Herrmann. In the booklet for the first volume of Music for a Darkened Theatre, Elfman described the first time he heard his music played by a full orchestra as one of the most thrilling experiences of his life.[citation needed] Elfman immediately developed a rapport with Burton and has gone on to score all but two of Burton's major studio releases: Ed Wood, scored by Howard Shore, which was under production while Elfman and Burton were having a fight, and Sweeney Todd, an adaptation of the 1979 Stephen Sondheim Broadway musical. He also, more recently, accompanied Tim Burton in the composition of music for "Almost Alice", the soundtrack for Alice in Wonderland.

Burton has said of his relationship with Elfman: "We don't even have to talk about the music. We don't even have to intellectualize – which is good for both of us, we're both similar that way. We're very lucky to connect" (Breskin, 1997).

In 2021 he released "Big Mess", his first non-soundtrack album since 1984's "So-Lo", which is often considered to rather be an Oingo Boingo album due to the presence of many other band members.

Elfman has three children: Lola, born in 1979; Mali, born in 1984; and Oliver, born in 2005. On November 29, 2003, Elfman married film actress Bridget Fonda. In 1997 he scored A Simple Plan – his only score for one of her films to date (although he did compose a cue for the film Army of Darkness, in which Fonda has a cameo). He is the uncle of actor Bodhi Elfman who is married to actress Jenna Elfman, known most notably in her role as Dharma in the TV series Dharma and Greg.

The soundtrack of MoS and BvS was amazing.
Even the Wonder Woman theme sounds less epic than Zimmer's version.

There as some comments that you can define it as “valid criticism “. While I do agree that there are some comments that are bitter over nostalgia, but I’m 100% sure that majority of the comments dislike elfmans score not because of the love for Hans Zimmer, but because the score just doesn’t appeal to them.

Im not sure if you’re quoting people or not, but Hans’s score is not depressing or brutal percussion at all.
look At Supermans first flight from man of steel. Or is she with you from BvS. I wouldn’t call that depressing and dark. The score fits perfectly with the scene, and to mention it makes the scene more intense and the themes are memorable.
Look at wonder woman’s theme that rubert and Hans made. It goes well with her bad ass warrior personality.

Elfmans score is good in its own way. I will admit, he did a good job with the classic themes from the animated Batman and superman film.
But HERE, in JL,
I didn’t enjoy his score because.. -Reusing themes from the 80’s. This is DCEU, not DCAU
-parts of this score sounded like scores from the avengers, Spider-Man
-it was very generic and bland, very unforgettable
-sounded like a score for a marvel movie. We can agree that marvel movies are superior but DC does it better when it comes to score.

I mean, did you hear the score during fight scene with Stephenwolf?
Compare that, to wonder woman’s score in no mans land.
WW: the score in no mans land, links well with Diana’s bravery and courage to step out of the trenches and fight for the helpless while leading her team across the battlefield. And ofc when she fought the German troops. That’s what we expected for JL

Well obviously not everyone loved MOs and hated JL. But I can tell you that the majority of fans had the same opinion.
If you see the comments on the videos of the scores of MOs and BvS, or Wonder Woman, then you can’t say it’s Zimmer fan boys. If people find it good, then they find it good.
Not because they’re fan boys.
And after reading the comments here, it’s clear that your statement isn’t correct. “Zimmer fan boys”.
And why is that? Because they don’t like Elfman’s score?

And I take back what I said on music critics. There’s some critics that hated the score, some that loved it, some found it average. But at the end of the day it’s what you think.
And I can’t really trust film critics these days. the last Jedi was at 92% based on film reviews. We really gonna buy into that?😒

Honestly, seeing Henry Cavill's superman on screen and not hearing his Zimmer theme was a major blow. That theme is just as much a character as Cavill is, and after two movies, they should have been inseparable. RIP "Flight," "Arcade," "Is She With You?" and all the other classics Zimmer and Junkie XL brought us.

Hans Zimmer created the WW theme which was awesome, this is also great, mixed with the JL's theme which gives it a unique theme with the orchestra, Elfman did a great job with the WW theme making it different but the WW theme by Rupert Gregson Williams on No Man's Land is far superior to both

@Donnie Gonzalez Nothing, when it’s used properly. Elfman and Zimmer are both great, but they have styles that couldn’t be more opposite of each other. This score is completely middle of the road, being passable and highly derivative of previous themes from other franchises without being anything special

JazukaiX I know that. But there was a way to make his theme become heroic having both Elfman's 89 batman theme and Junkie's batman theme. I played it in piano with lower darker notes and it sounds awesome. Sadly there was no remix of both but only Keaton's theme.

When WW's theme came out in BvS and WW as composed and renderred by Hans and Junkie w/ Tina, it was unanimously hailed. Danny's though really split the fans apart. I've been an Elfman fan for a long time but this... definitely fell short. Still beautiful but not as impactful as the Zimmer/XL/Guo rendition.

I really liked Zimmer's idea for Wonder Woman's theme. The electric cello provided a unique sound just for Wonder Woman that properly presented her power and separated her from the generic horn themes of your standard superhero. There's so much power to that sound of the electric cello that's just gone here

This is one of the few times that a Score/ soundtrack has contributed to be not liking a film. Most of Elfman's Whimsy just does NOT work in this universe that Snyder helped to set up. Kept taking me out of the film. If this would have been my intro to the DCU I probable wouldn't care nearly as much. Rupert Gregson-Williams did a far superior job reworking the theme.

I've seen so many comments about "where is the electric cello?"
If u listen carefully, you can here it from 2:17 - 2:25 and 2:35. It's blended in with the trumpets. Kinda frustrates me when people ask where it is when it is there.
And yes, I know it is not the original theme with only the electric cello. But imo the trumpets make it sounds great and more intense and epic! I do understand why people get angry tho.
But please stop with the immature comments like "fuck you elfman" or "this is awful, you ruined it", it is so childish. Saying "fuck you" will not magically change the soundtrack and IS NOT CONSTRUCTIVE AND HELPFUL AT ALL!
If u do want it to change, give constructive criticism, be specific of what u dont like about it. Be specific of what u thought worked and didnt work (for example: I didnt like the added trumpets because I think the electric cello sound is iconic for wonder woman and adding trumpets reduces that iconic nature).

I honestly think when joss wheadon came in he got rid of junkie and replaced him with danny because joss used danny for avengers and the only thing rememberable about that score was the avengers theme and honestly even the theme for the avengers is hard to remember sometimes

Love Danny Elfman. Suck it up and wait to see how it fits the film. Can't wait to see how it works with the movie. Score sounds terrific. I enjoy Zimmer's work as well, but felt the BvS score fell flat, with the exception of Wonder Woman's theme. Zimmer's work for the Nolan trilogy was much more enjoyable.

Two favorite superhero scores are Batman (89) and Superman. No one has come close to replicating those two scores.

Seems most of the complaints is the score being too orchestral or "old fashioned." I guess I am an old fashioned guy.

I like the way he worked Wonder Woman's theme in here.

this version really robs the theme of its identity. you have all of these people in the comments bashing zimmer fans and you have all of these danny fanbois claiming this is amazing. idc for either composer like that to fanboi either, i'm just saying what it comes off as to me. it comes off generic and lazy. it comes off like it could be any hero's theme in any universe. it did not fit the scene in which it played and the entire score was forgettable.

It's not wonder woman 2. It's a JUSTICE LEAGUE film where all members of the team work together or try to band together. You want a better theme? See Wonder Woman 2. Get my drift? A Justice League film would not just focus solely on Wonder Woman.

At about 40 seconds it started sounding goofy, like we’d gone back to past Batman films. I half expected a load of wind up penguin bombs to waddle into the scene! It really dated it. That’s a serious scene so why make it goofy?

@Teemo6544 When people write that they hate the score because it sounds "heroic" or "like from the 80s" or "like marvel", it's hard to take those comments seriously, because none of these statements is a valid criticism. It just feels like they're saying "I don't like it, because it's not Hans Zimmer, who does dark, depressing droning and brutal percussion wallpapers instead of classic superhero music with a full orchestra" and dismiss it as "marvel crap". But you cannot argue that from a pure compositional point of view Elfmans music is just superior. Just because he sticks to the roots, it doesn't mean that this kind music has no right to exist in a modern film. Hans Zimmer can be great, sure, but his style of music is everywhere nowadays. For me, Justice League by Elfman was actually more refreshing than another drum heavy, minimalistic wallpaper score.
That being said, I kinda get the frustration of the people who really liked the first two scores. Whithin the franchise this one sticks out like a sore thumb, but on its own I think it is pretty good and serves the movie well. Not a masterpiece, but by no means a terrible score.

@Teemo6544 Well, most film music fans just don't post on YouTube, so that cannot be considered the only source of opinion. There several communities, specialized on film music, where the opinion towards those scores are often very different. Many comments that I read here seem to me that they are just coming from Zimmer fanboys. And about the critics, well, look for some actual film music critics like Filmtracks, Movie Music UK and so on, maybe you see that not everyone loves MoS and hates JL.

Wow, Elfman managed to make Wonder Woman’s theme sound like his original Batman theme. This entire soundtrack sounds like a mutilated Batman soundtrack with bits of Wonder Woman and Superman themes spliced in. Does Elfman ever experiment or try new things? He has one style and that’s it.

Zimmer and Elfman both have particular style of their own. Its just Elfman usually comes up with memorable theme's while Zimmer uses a shit ton of brass and percussion to the point where it's just a mess of loud noises.

While the Wonder Woman theme is amazing I occasionally find it obnoxious in some scenes in BVS and WW. I like that Elfman made his own version without the electric cello and instead using orchestral music.

I have to be honest, I dont like Elfman's soundtrack at all. Compared to Zimmer and RGW in WW, the theme in JL sounds really generic and cartoonish. He used the classic superman and batman theme, while it might be nostalgic, but I dont think it suits the movie at all. There's no epic feel. I believe that Junkie XL is a better choice for JL tbh

It is the JUSTICE LEAGUE where all members are in it together. They are a team. They are working together and yes the WW theme is better in terms of clarity and stand-alone in WW or BvS but as a team they are working together and her theme is still there and it's different this time. It is subjective about whether it's epic or not. Cartoonish? The JL is based from the comics.
