Green Eyes
Dark Moor Lyrics

And old legend tells
A spirit of the devil dwells
In a lake beyond the trees
And I found my ruin in this place
Green eyes
Like a beam of the sun
Within the white foam
Green eyes
Your glance burned my chest
The desire of the quest
Of some eyes like those
Loneliness did filled my soul
And my mind they stole
I became drunk with its melancholy
When I saw her eyes in water
Green eyes
Like a beam of the sun
That, swift, hides while it runs
Within the white foam
Green eyes
Your glance burned my chest
The desire of the quest
Of some eyes like those
My course was her call
To her bed of emeralds
Waters jumped in glints of light
And then closed over my body
Green eyes
Like a beam of the sun
That, swift, hides while it runs
Within the white foam
Green eyes
Your glance burned my chest
The desire of the quest
Of some eyes like those
The lyrics of Dark Moor's "Green Eyes" are based on the story of Gustavo Adolfo Becquer, a Spanish poet and writer known for his works in Romanticism. According to the legend, there is a spirit of the devil that dwells in a lake beyond the trees, which is where the singer of the song finds ruin. The singer then describes the green eyes that he sees, comparing them to a beam of the sun that quickly disappears. The eyes burn his chest with desire, and he becomes intoxicated with their melancholy.
The lyricist portrays the loneliness the singer feels in his soul and how this loneliness overtook his thoughts when he saw the eyes in the water. The green eyes seem to call out to him, and he accepts their call to their bed of emeralds. Water jumps in glints of light with the singer, and soon after, the waters close over his body. The lyrics show the singer's obsession with the green eyes as he seeks to fulfill his desire by answering the call of the emerald bed.
Overall, the lyrics of "Green Eyes" encapsulate the tragic theme of an individual's downfall when driven by desire and obsession for something, in this case, the green eyes that the singer saw in the water.
