Nevermore
Dark Moor Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Demons in my mind
Bind to write the world
World forevermore
Horror

Master of the pen
When the raven lies
Sighes, but never dies
Darkness

The imp of
The perverse
Whisper from the drink
The mask of
The red death
Hides the face of his tortured soul

[Chorus:]
Free mind confirmed
Just behind reality
Its kingdom is by the sea
Grim rhymes of yore
Were born in Baltimore
The bird said: "Nevermore"

He was in love for
The olny cause of doom
Fighting for love with
The enamoured tomb

Was his love
Like a dove
Tender sweet and frail
Like a Sail
In a gale
He was the eternal lover

[Chorus]

in the edge of knife
Life in the tight rope
Hope to take the slope
Sorrow

in the time of tears
Near the last shore
Sore to take the door
Sadness

the pit and
The pendulum
Hang over his heart
The black cat
The one-eyed
Sees his conscience beyond the wall

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Dark Moor's song Nevermore express a concept of the mind being haunted by demons that drive the writer to create a horror that lasts forevermore. The first stanza portrays how the demons in the writer's mind bind him to write horror into the world, where it will exist forevermore. The second stanza focuses on the writer's skill as a master of the pen, as he writes about the darkness that surrounds him, while he also references Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven," with lines such as "When the raven lies, sighs, but never dies." The third stanza brings in themes of mask-wearing and tortured souls, evoking the classic Poe tale, "The Masque of the Red Death."

The chorus reinforces the belief that the mind can be freed if it confirms itself just behind reality, in its own realm or kingdom by the sea. The words refer to the dark and grim writing of Edgar Allan Poe, whose poems and stories were born in Baltimore. This is a fitting tribute to Poe's place of birth, as well as to his influence on literature. The bird's declaration that "Nevermore" is a statement that recurs throughout Poe's work, particularly in "The Raven," which is clearly an inspiration for this song. The final stanza refers to the concept of life being a tightrope walk, balanced on the edge of a knife. The writer is in search of hope to take the slope, but sadness and sorrow like "The Pit and the Pendulum" hang over his heart, while his conscience - like "The Black Cat" - sees beyond his walls.

Interesting facts about the song Nevermore include that it was released on the album The Gates of Oblivion in 2002. The song has been characterized as power metal, with classical operatic vocals and intense, galloping guitar riffs. Dark Moor is a Spanish band that formed in 1993, and they take their name from a cave in Loch Ness, Scotland. The band is known for exploring themes of literature and history in their music, often taking inspiration from authors like Poe or H.P. Lovecraft. The Gates of Oblivion was their fourth studio album, and it is considered to be one of their most successful works, showcasing their blend of rock, metal, and classical influences. The song Nevermore is notable for its lyrics, which provide a tribute to the legacy of Edgar Allan Poe and the influence of Gothic horror. The song has been covered by several other bands, including Elegy, which released a version in 2008. Finally, the chords to the song are as follows:

Intro: Em - D - Em - D - Em - D - C - D

Verse: Em - D - Em - D - C - D - Em - D

Chorus: C - G - Dm - F
Em - D - C - D
