I Will Go Sailing No More
Disney Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Out among the stars I sail, way beyond the moon
In my silver ship I sail, a dream that ended to soon
Now I know exactly who I am and what I'm here for
And I will go sailing no more

All the things I thought I'd be, all the brave things I'd done
Vanished like a snowflake with the rising of the sun
Never more to sail my ship, where no man has gone before
And I will go sailing no more

But no, it can't be true I could fly if I wanted to

Like a bird in the sky if I believe I can fly, why I'd fly
Clearly, I will go sailing, no more

Overall Meaning

The song "I Will Go Sailing No More" is a poignant solo from the character Buzz Lightyear in the movie "Toy Story". The lyrics symbolize Buzz's realization that he is just a toy and that his dreams of being a space ranger were misguided. He had always believed that he was a real space ranger, and his ultimate goal was to return to his home planet, but this dream came to an end suddenly. He had to come to understand that he is just a toy and that his purpose is to be there for his owner, Andy.

The first stanza, "Out among the stars I sail, way beyond the moon, in my silver ship I sail, a dream that ended too soon," describes Buzz's exhilarating and vivid imagination. He flew his toy spaceship with incredible speed and ease. Still, now he realizes that his reality is limited to the world of toys, and his dream of flying among the planets is over. He has a newfound understanding of himself and his life's purpose, as seen in the lyrics of the refrain, "Now I know exactly who I am and what I'm here for, and I will go sailing no more."

In the second stanza, "All the things I thought I'd be, all the brave things I'd done, vanished like a snowflake with the rising of the sun. Never more to sail my ship, where no man has gone before, and I will go sailing no more," Buzz reflects on his mistaken identity and how his previous thoughts of himself have faded away. He's no longer the space ranger he always thought he was, and the bravery he exhibited in his adventures around Andy's room mean little in the real world. His ship will no longer go on journeys to unexplored territories, and he must face the truth that he's only a toy. Nevertheless, he still holds onto a small bit of hope, hoping that he will be able to fly, although it is now impossible.
