Born into a poor family in Maceió (capital of Alagoas, Northeast Brazil), Djavan formed the group Luz, Som, Dimensão (LSD - "Light, Sound, Dimension"), playing Beatles covers. In 1973 Djavan moved to Rio de Janeiro and started singing in local nightclubs. After competing in several festivals he gained attention and recorded the album A Voz, o Violão e a Arte de Djavan in 1976. The album included the song "Flor de Lis" which became one of his most memorable hits. Albums that followed included his other musical influence, African music, and additional hits followed like "Açaí", "Sina" and "Samurai", which featured Stevie Wonder's harmonica. His best known compositions are: "Meu Bem Querer", "Oceano", "Faltando um Pedaço", "Esquinas", "Seduzir", "Pétala", "Lilás", "A Ilha", "Fato Consumado", "Álibi", "Azul" and "Serrado".
His songs have been recorded by Al Jarreau, Carmen McRae, The Manhattan Transfer, and, in Brazil by Gal Costa, Dori Caymmi, Nana Caymmi, Lenine, João Bosco, Chico Buarque, Daniela Mercury, Ney Matogrosso, Dominguinhos, Caetano Veloso, Maria Bethânia, Johnny Alf, and other artists. The 1988 Epic Records single, "Stephen's Kingdom", featured a guest appearance from Stevie Wonder.
In 1999, his live concert double-volume album, Ao Vivo, has sold 1.2 million copies and the song, "Acelerou" became the Best Brazilian song of the year at 2000 Latin Grammy Awards.

A Rota Do Indivíduo

E algumas folhas deitam sobre a estrada
O frio é o agasalho que esquenta
O coração gelado quando venta
Movendo a água abandonada
Restos de sonhos sobre um novo dia
Amores nos vagões, vagões nos trilhos
Que mesmo não te vendo te vigia
Como mãe, como mãe
Que dorme olhando os filhos
Com os olhos na estrada
E no mistério solitário da penugem
Vê-se a vida correndo, parada
Como se não existisse chegada
Na tarde distante, ferrugem ou nada
Mera luz
Que invade a tarde cinzenta
E algumas folhas deitam sobre a estrada
O frio é o agasalho
Que esquenta
O coração gelado
Quando venta
Movendo a água abandonada
Restos de sonho
Sobre um novo dia
Amores nos vagões
Vagões nos trilhos
Parece que quem parte é a ferrovia
Que mesmo não te vendo te vigia
Como mãe, como mãe
Que dorme olhando os filhos
Com os olhos na estrada
E no mistério solitário da penugem
Vê-se a vida correndo parada
Como se não existisse chegada
Na tarde distante
Ferrugem ou nada
The song "A Rota Do Indivíduo" by Djavan is a deep reflection on life's journey and the inevitability of change. The opening lines describe the setting, where a gray afternoon is brightened by a faint light and leaves fall on the road. The cold is referred to as an embrace that warms the heart that is frozen when the wind blows. The image of moving abandoned water is symbolic of life's journey and how it continues to move on despite obstacles and unexpected events.
The second verse talks about the remnants of dreams on a new day and the fleeting nature of relationships as trains move along the tracks. The line "Parece que quem parte é a ferrovia" (It seems that those who are leaving are the trains) highlights the idea that time and circumstances move on whether or not we are ready to let go. The metaphor of a mother watching over her children as they sleep can be interpreted as a representation of the universe watching over us.
The final verse reflects on the mystery of life and how we keep moving forward even though there may not be a definite end in sight. The metaphor of "ferrugem ou nada" (rust or nothing) represents the uncertainty of what lies ahead and the possibility of not reaching our desired destination. Overall, the song encourages listeners to embrace life's journey and appreciate each moment, even though change is inevitable.

Yamandu Costa retirou a sétima corda de seu violão para o Djavan tocar. Quanta gentileza! Vocês sabem a dimensão disso? Djavan tocando no violão do Yamandu Costa.
