’60s-sounding Welsh blues singer Aimee Anne Duffy - known professionally as Duffy - released her debut single Rockferry in December 2007. After relocating to London in 2006, she came to the attention of Rough Trade. She is often compared to late ’60s soul diva Dusty Springfield and has experienced significant mainstream success with the single Mercy reaching #1 in the United Kingdom. The debut album, Rockferry, was released in March 2008, and also made #1 on the UK album chart. Bernard Butler of Suede worked extensively on the album, lending it an authentic and wonderfully produced lush ’60s sound.
The 24-year-old’s debut album, Rockferry, triumphed at the 2009 BRIT Awards for British Album, British Female Solo Artist, and British Breakthrough Act.

I
Duffy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
From the depths of the water
Slipped in slowly, let the water rise up against me
As I went in deeper let it surround, surround me
Wanted to turn around but it was too late
5000 feet under the ground in a lake
Wish I could wake realize its a dream, but I was
Too damn deep for anyone to hear me scream
I want out
Sinking, not resisting in anymore
Cold surrounds me as fall to the dreaded floor
Vision, blurs the would around
As I keep on tumbling down
Wanted to turn around but it was too late
5000 feet under the ground in a lake
Wish I could wake realize its a dream, but I was
Too damn deep for anyone to hear me scream
I want out
I want out
Sinking, deeper
Waiting till I hit the floor
Falling, faster
Don't know if I can take it anymore, oh
Wanted to turn around but it was too late
5000 feet under the ground in a lake
Wish I could wake realize its a dream, but I was
Too damn deep for anyone to hear me scream
I want out
I want out
I want help
Because, I want out
In the lyrics of Duffy's song "I," the singer describes a feeling of being trapped and overwhelmed by their circumstances. The imagery of being submerged in water symbolizes a sense of drowning or being consumed by a situation that is beyond their control. The singer feels like they are sinking deeper and deeper, unable to resist the pull of their surroundings. Despite their desire to turn back or wake up from what feels like a nightmare, they are trapped in their current state and unable to escape.
The repetition of the lines "I want out" reflects the singer's desperation for relief from their distressing situation. They feel isolated and unheard, as if their screams for help are being muffled by the depths in which they find themselves. The mention of being 5000 feet under the ground in a lake emphasizes the immense weight and pressure they feel, both physically and emotionally. The sense of suffocation and confinement is palpable in the way the lyrics describe the cold and blurring vision as the singer loses their grip on reality.
The singer's internal struggle is mirrored in their external environment, as they continue to fall and tumble down into the darkness. The feeling of falling faster and the uncertainty of whether they can endure any longer heighten the sense of impending doom and hopelessness. Despite their yearning for escape and help, the singer resigns themselves to the idea that they are too far gone for anyone to come to their aid. The plea for help at the end of the lyrics underscores their desperate need for assistance and a way out of the depths of their despair.
Overall, the lyrics of "I" convey a profound sense of isolation, overwhelm, and desperation. The singer's struggle to break free from their circumstances and the feeling of being trapped in a suffocating environment are powerfully expressed through vivid imagery and emotive language. The repetition of the longing for escape and help reflects the singer's deep-seated desire for relief and connection amidst their inner turmoil.

"The blank pages of my diary,
That I haven't touched since you left me,
The closed blinds in my home,
See no light or day"
These words strike me in the heart. They are so true. I have lost one, or rather two people in my life, who I will never get back to. And I'm afraid of never finding again in life that joy that I had when they were with me. because it is a joy that only they could give me.

My dad and I used to listen to this song together and I told him if he ever died, I would feel this way and now he's gone and this song definitely hits very different. I feel every word. My condolences to you.
