In 2010, Earth First released "To The Night" and "Still Remains" as a 7" on Cloudberry Records. Castriota has composed and recorded cello arrangements for Home Covers, Help Stamp Out Loneliness, and Korallreven, and has been releasing music as Fimbria since 2014.

I saw this when it first came out as a child and at 68 it STILL brings chills up my spine. When GORT appears out of the spacecraft and walks down towards crowd and that ominous eerie music starts playing and the ship seals itself up......................you just know there is going to be trouble.

The way they introduced Gort that was brilliant. They had him ALREADY standing there when the soldiers looked up, that made it much more powerful psychologically. The music was brilliant as well :)

@Losophy There's nothing wrong with using today's more advanced tech if it accomplishes what you want more efficiently. But what matters is how you use it. Many movies today are slick flashy garbage. The writers, directors, cinematographers, set designers, lighting designers, musicians, editors etc. who worked on this film were great artists, and the end result transcends the limits of their technology.

Visually and with its special effects, "The Day" was ahead of its time. It still looks advanced. Gort was certainly the most terrifying space weapon ever imagined. Bernard Herrmann's musical score was superb, brilliant.

The very credible story, fine acting, superb music and sound/special effects make this the best (IMO) science fiction film of all-time. It really stands the test of time. Great foresight in the storytelling and in the entirety of this great film. Nice

The greatest scene from the best movie (and my top favorite) and greatest story of all time. Unstoppable, unbeatable technology, on par with the Krell in 'Forbidden Planet' or the Martian war machines in the original 'War of the Worlds', and put to such great use to pound into an ignorant humanity some long-overdue ultimate humility. Oh, see how they run and scream as the master enforcer steps forward.
The movie's only shortcoming was that he was not shown a bit more like this, in fulfilling his intended role.

I'm glad my history teacher showed me this. My first exposure was that really bad remake from several years back. I like this take on Gort a lot better. Much more efficient and subtle like I'd imagine a war machine infinitely more advanced than ours. Quickly disabling the human weapons harmlessly.

I love the way the ship closes up behind Gort the moment he steps off that ramp...that would have really alarmed me more than anything else had I been there in person. The immediate appearance of Gort- along with the sealing up of that ship- definitely indicate "battle stations" have been declared; it's a good thing that Klaatu wasn't knocked out or killed with that first shot and was able to tell Gort to "stand down". Yikes!

What really gets me in this scene is how quiet it is. The closing of the hatch and ramp, Gort's footfalls, utterly silent. Even the devastating ray weapon is muted, compared to humanity's primitive noise makers. To me it speaks volumes about how advanced and powerful this tech is.

The original Harry Bates story on which this is based is “Farewell to the Master.” Klaatu was shot dead, and the robot, “Gnut,” cloned a bird, a gorilla, a museum narrator and Klaatu all from voice recordings. This movie is one of the best science fiction movies of all time! The special effects are excellent for the time (1951!), and there is nothing at all wrong with the design of the ship, it is consistent with observations of alien craft up to the present. Witnesses have observed on many occasions, how the openings and portals seem to simply appear, and disappear again into the hulls of the ships. This effect is called "Molecular Integration", and involves the ability to electromagnetically separate molecules of matter, and then restore them to their original position without weakening the bond, and this enables the hull to maintain it's integrity. Note the mature theme of an alien representative being sent on a mission of peace, and acknowledgement, rather than some sort of invasion and violent assault with a destructive intent.

If the remake had followed the sequence closely, with only updates to the visuals, it would be perfect.

This is a classic sci-fi were the alien arrives , not to destroy but to advise humans about their aggressive nature and how when they are capable of reaching for the stars they better behave themselves.

Originally Spencer Tracy was considered to play Klaatu , but Robert Wise wanted Michael Rennie , who was basically an unknown actor from England at the time.
Of course we can't think of anyone else but Rennie in that part now but I wonder how it would have been if Tracy had the part and if it would have been as good with a well known actor, I think folks would have saw Tracy and not the Klaatu charicter so Wise was right to use Rennie.

The Black Hole was probably Disney's biggest failure. The movie was their attempt to compete with Star Wars. Needless to say it didn't become anywhere near as popular as Star Wars. That said even with mostly cheesy special effects... The Black Hole is an awesome movie 👍

My fav UFO flick I think. very credible acting, realistic story line even today and believable situations for this period in cinematic production. The arrival and landing of the spacecraft was really well done and not overdone. The craft became totally silent on touching ground I always thought that notion was well ahead of its time. The UFO'S in Speilbergs flick were totally overdone in shape and the colored lights everywhere on the ships seemed typical Hollywood excess. Still really enjoyed that film though. In any event this one is a classic for sure. - Maybe one day?

I was about 8 when I saw Gort walk down the ramp at Saturday morning pictures. The staff must have been crying with laughter, you could have heard a pin drop, as all us kids were petrified.

I always loved how the saucer ‘healed’ up when closing itself and retracting it’s boarding ramp. That was the sexiest way to close a spaceship evar!

How they did it: The saucer openings were sealed with putty, smoothed over and painted to be invisible to a camera. It opened normally, breaking the seal. The shots of it closing are merely reversed footage of it opening, so the openings appear to seal perfectly.

And in the scene it's so silent! No machine sounds at all. A small detail which adds to the sense of how far beyond our technology this is.

I loved this movie so much, around 2005 I got the idea of contacting Billy Gray and invite him to lunch for a reminiscent chat about his experience with TDESS. He kindly replied to my e-mail but declined saying, “Thank you, but I’m very happy in my reclusive lifestyle.” But he did comment on how well he thought the movie has stood the “test of time” with its anti-nuclear message. He seemed very nice.

You go, Gort! By the way, the first lieutenant to approach Klaatu after he is wounded also appeared in many cowboy movies back in the 1950's, often playing a "bad guy". I don't recall his name.

That was impressive for a 1950s movie. It doesn't look like a B-movie, and visual effects look surprisingly amazing.

I wonder if the movie has a much bigger budget than all the typical B-movies of that time.

Better special effects than most modern movies

I sometimes feel this movie was made by people 'in the know' as a real message to us. It has elements that are oddly specific with ideas that were WAY ahead of their time. The design of the ship, GORT, etc., are straight out of interviews that Steven Greer conducted with former military and military contractor personnel.

Loved this movie and it's message so much I started designing flying saucers and power units for them in 5th grade, so I could do this for real. Alas, things don't always work out.
