Her first album ‘Mila mou apla’ (‘ Just speak to me’) was a collaboration with new singers Manolis Lidakis and Melina Tanagri, based on songs composed by Taki Bougas with lyrics from Antonis Andrikaki. With every following album, Dimou’s popularity increased, thanks to her modern, natural and flexible interpretations, combining the more traditional Greek roots with western pop style.
In 1986 she collaborated with Lakis Papadopoulos on her album ‘Kata bathos alepou’ (‘Basically fox’). With her by that time already highly acclaimed husky, sultry voice she sang both ballads and pop-rock songs. In this periode of time, she collaborated with famous artists like Georgios Dalaras and Mikis Theodorakis.
Her 1988 album ‘Prosopika’ (‘Personal’), recorded with G. Spanos, was both artistically as commercially a great success. In the next decade Dimou keeps releasing new albums regularly, always combining Greek folk music with western arrangements and world music influences. In 1990 she released the album ‘Pathis’ (‘Passions’), on which she chanted byzantine hymns on a requiem by D. Papostolou.
In the second half of the nineties, popularity and album sales decreased. A new generation of Greek pop singers seemed to have taken her place. Dimou seemed to be stuck between Greek folk and modern pop, unable to rejuvenate herself. Around the start of the new millennium, inspiration and creativity seemed to have returned, resulting in more frequent album releases and collaborations with international artists like Alpha Blondy, Salif Keita, The Christians, Gipsy Kings and Linton Kwesi Johnson.
In her almost thirty year spanning career, Eleni Dimou recorded more than 20 albums, nine went gold and three platinum in Greece. She is married to producer and engineer Akis Golfidis and the couple have a son named Anthony.
Tha Katatheso
Eleni Dimou Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
In the song "Tha Katatheso" by Eleni Dimou, the lyrics delve into themes of despair, unemployment, and evictions. The singer expresses a sense of helplessness in the face of these challenges that cannot be overcome. The repetition of phrases like "απελπισίες ανεργίες και εξώσεις" (despair, unemployment, and evictions) highlights the overwhelming nature of the struggles faced by individuals in society. These words paint a picture of a bleak existence marked by economic and social hardships, creating a sense of hopelessness and resignation.
The lyrics also speak of unrequited love, symbolizing a deep and unfulfilled romantic longing. The singer admits to never being able to bring this love into the light, suggesting a hidden or suppressed emotion that remains unspoken. The reference to the beloved as the central focus of their life, "Εσένα έχω στη ζωή μου τίποτα άλλο" (I have nothing else in my life but you), emphasizes the all-encompassing nature of this unattainable love, which serves as a poignant reminder of lost opportunities and unfulfilled desires.
The song further delves into the impact of modern technology and its often cold and impersonal nature. The mention of "την ψυχρή τεχνολογία" (cold technology) and "τα κρύα μάτια δίχως φως κι ευαισθησία" (cold eyes without light and sensitivity) underscores the dehumanizing aspects of technological advancements and the loss of empathy and warmth in human interactions. The juxtaposition of cold machinery with the absence of emotional depth underscores the disconnect and alienation that can arise in an increasingly digital and automated world.
Overall, "Tha Katatheso" paints a complex and layered picture of human experiences, touching on themes of societal struggles, personal longing, and the disconnect between technology and human emotions. The lyrics capture a sense of loss, longing, and resignation in the face of overwhelming challenges, urging listeners to reflect on the complexities of modern life and the enduring power of emotions and relationships in navigating a rapidly changing world.
