In the '60s, Elis was a leader and a standard-bearer in defense of Brazilian popular music, heavily contributing to the formation of the MPB label, with commercial and ideological characteristics at the same time. She was the first major artist to emerge from music festivals in the 1960s and detached herself from the Bossa Nova aesthetic through the use of her vocal range and drama. Initially, her style was influenced by radio singers, especially Ângela Maria. After four unsuccessful studio albums — Viva a Brotolândia (1961), Poema de Amor (1962), Elis Regina (1963), O Bem do Amor (1963) — Elis was the biggest revelation of the TV Excelsior festival in 1965, when he sang "Arrastão" by Vinícius de Moraes and Edu Lobo. This feat would guarantee him the invitation to act on television and, shortly afterwards, the title of first star of Brazilian popular song, when he started to command, alongside Jair Rodrigues, one of the two most important Brazilian popular music programs, O Fino da bossa. In 1967, she married Ronaldo Bôscoli, then director of O Fino da Bossa. From 1972, Elis began a relationship with César Camargo Mariano, which would last until 1981, in one of the most successful partnerships in Brazilian Popular Music.
She sang many genres: MPB, bossa nova, samba, rock and jazz. Interpreting songs like "Madalena", "Águas de Março", "Atrás da Porta", "Como Nosso Pais", "O Bêbado e a Equilibrista" and "Querellas do Brasil", he recorded moments of happiness, love, sadness and patriotism. Throughout his career, he stood out for also singing songs by artists, still little known, such as Milton Nascimento, Ivan Lins, Belchior, Renato Teixeira, Aldir Blanc, João Bosco, helping to launch them and publicize their works. , boosting them in the Brazilian music scene. Among other partnerships, the duets she had with Jair Rodrigues, Tom Jobim and Rita Lee are famous. With her second husband, pianist César Camargo Mariano, she consecrated a long work of great creativity and musical consistency and, in technical terms, was considered the best brazilian singer. His most memorable artistic presence is perhaps registered on the albums Em Pleno Verão (1970), Elis (1972), Elis (1973), Elis & Tom (1974), Elis (1974), Falso Brilhante (1976), Transversal do Tempo (1978). ), Essa Mulher (1979), Saudade do Brasil (1980) and Elis (1980). She was the first person to inscribe her own voice as if it were an instrument, in the Order of Musicians of Brazil. In 2013, she was elected the best female voice in Brazilian music by Rolling Stone Magazine. Elis was also mentioned in the list of the greatest artists in Brazilian music, ranking 14th, being the best-placed woman. In November of the same year, a musical was premiered in honor of her Elis, the musical.
Elis Regina died prematurely at the age of 36, at the height of her career, causing strong commotion in the country and leaving a vast body of work in Brazilian popular music. Although there were controversies and disputes as to the cause of death, the tests showed that the cause was the consumption of cocaine associated with alcohol, which caused a cardiac arrest.

Das coisas que aprendi nos discos
Quero lhe contar como eu vivi
E tudo o que aconteceu comigo
Viver é melhor que sonhar
Eu sei que o amor é uma coisa boa
Mas também sei que qualquer canto
De qualquer pessoa
Por isso cuidado meu bem
Há perigo na esquina
Eles venceram
E o sinal está fechado prá nós
Que somos jovens
Para abraçar seu irmão
E beijar sua menina na rua
É que se fez o seu braço
O seu lábio e a sua voz
Você me pergunta pela minha paixão
Digo que estou encantada
Como uma nova invenção
Eu vou ficar nesta cidade
Não vou voltar pro sertão
Pois vejo vir vindo no vento
Cheiro de nova estação
Eu sei de tudo na ferida viva
Do meu coração
Já faz tempo eu vi você na rua
Cabelo ao vento
Gente jovem reunida
Na parede da memória
Essa lembrança
É o quadro que dói mais
Minha dor é perceber
Que apesar de termos
Feito tudo o que fizemos
Ainda somos os mesmos
E vivemos
Ainda somos os mesmos
E vivemos
Como os nossos pais
Nossos ídolos ainda são os mesmos
E as aparências
Não enganam não
Você diz que depois deles
Não apareceu mais ninguém
Você pode até dizer
Que eu 'tô por fora
Ou então que eu 'tô inventando
Mas é você que ama o passado
E que não vê
É você que ama o passado
E que não vê
Que o novo sempre vem
Hoje eu sei que quem me deu a ideia
De uma nova consciência e juventude
'Tá em casa
Guardado por deus
Contando vil metal
Minha dor é perceber
Que apesar de termos feito tudo, tudo
Tudo o que fizemos
Nós ainda somos os mesmos
E vivemos
Ainda somos os mesmos
E vivemos
Ainda somos os mesmos
E vivemos como os nossos pais
The song "Como Nossos Pais" by Elis Regina is a beautiful composition that tells a story of a young person who tries to convey to their beloved how they have lived and what they have gone through instead of discussing things they learned from listening to music. They also emphasize that living is better than dreaming and that they understand that love is beautiful, but it is not enough for life. The singer warns their beloved to be careful because there is danger at every corner and that the "they" have won, leaving the young with a closed sign. The youth of the singer is emphasized with the line "Para abraçar seu irmão/E beijar sua menina na rua/E que se fez o seu braço/O seu lábio e a sua voz" (To hug your brother/And kiss your girl in the street/That's what your arm was made for/Your lip and your voice). The singer also talks about seeing a smell of a new season coming through the wind, which symbolizes change and new beginnings.
The song talks about a memory of a moment where the singer saw their beloved, and it has left a permanent mark on them. The lyrics emphasize the pain of the singer where despite all efforts, things have not changed, and they still live like their parents. The singer emphasizes that the same idols that their parents had are still relevant, and they cannot seem to move forward from that mindset. The singer also talks about someone who gave them the idea of a new way of living, which they have not achieved and that person is now at home counting money. The song ends with the same notion of feeling pain that despite everything that has been done, they still feel like the same people who live like their parents did.

Não quero lhe falar meu grande amor
I don't want to talk to you, my great love
Das coisas que aprendi nos discos
About the things I learned in records
Quero lhe contar como eu vivi
I want to tell you how I lived
E tudo o que aconteceu comigo
And everything that happened to me
Viver é melhor que sonhar
Living is better than dreaming
Eu sei que o amor é uma coisa boa
I know that love is a good thing
Mas também sei que qualquer canto
But I also know that any corner
É menor do que a vida
Is smaller than life
Por isso cuidado meu bem
So be careful, my dear
Há perigo na esquina
There is danger on the corner
Eles venceram
They won
E o sinal está fechado prá nós
And the signal is closed to us
Que somos jovens
Who are young
Para abraçar seu irmão
To hug your brother
E beijar sua menina na rua
And kiss your girl on the street
É que se fez o seu braço
That's what made your arm
O seu lábio e a sua voz
Your lip and your voice
Você me pergunta pela minha paixão
You ask me about my passion
Digo que estou encantada
I say I'm enchanted
Como uma nova invenção
Like a new invention
Eu vou ficar nesta cidade
I'm going to stay in this city
Não vou voltar pro sertão
I'm not going back to the countryside
Pois vejo vir vindo no vento
Because I see it coming in the wind
Cheiro de nova estação
The smell of a new season
Eu sei de tudo na ferida viva
I know everything in the live wound
Do meu coração
Of my heart
Já faz tempo eu vi você na rua
I saw you on the street a long time ago
Cabelo ao vento
Hair blowing in the wind
Gente jovem reunida
Young people gathered
Na parede da memória
On the wall of memory
Essa lembrança
This memory
É o quadro que dói mais
Is the picture that hurts the most
Minha dor é perceber
My pain is to realize
Que apesar de termos
That despite us
Feito tudo o que fizemos
Having done everything we did
Ainda somos os mesmos
We are still the same
E vivemos
And we live
Ainda somos os mesmos
We are still the same
E vivemos
And we live
Como os nossos pais
Like our parents
Nossos ídolos ainda são os mesmos
Our idols are still the same
E as aparências
And the appearances
Não enganam não
Don't deceive us
Você diz que depois deles
You say that after them
Não apareceu mais ninguém
No one else appeared
Você pode até dizer
You can even say
Que eu 'tô por fora
That I'm out of it
Ou então que eu 'tô inventando
Or then that I'm inventing
Mas é você que ama o passado
But it's you who loves the past
E que não vê
And doesn't see
É você que ama o passado
It's you who loves the past
E que não vê
And doesn't see
Que o novo sempre vem
That the new always comes
Hoje eu sei que quem me deu a ideia
Today, I know who gave me the idea
De uma nova consciência e juventude
Of a new consciousness and youthfulness
'Tá em casa
Is at home
Guardado por deus
Saved by God
Contando vil metal
Counting dirty money
Minha dor é perceber
My pain is to realize
Que apesar de termos feito tudo, tudo
That despite having done everything, everything
Tudo o que fizemos
Everything we did
Nós ainda somos os mesmos
We are still the same
E vivemos
And we live
Ainda somos os mesmos
We are still the same
E vivemos
And we live
Ainda somos os mesmos
We are still the same
E vivemos como os nossos pais
And we live like our parents
