Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong's Oh Doctor Jesus convey religious fervour and a hope for redemption. The song expresses supplication to the divine being for the troubles faced by the characters. Serena, Lily, Peter and Porgy are all hopeful for their ailment to be cured by the almighty. They recall instances where Jesus has cured people of their ailments and caste out the devil, putting their faith firmly in the doctor from above. The lyrics highlight the desperation of the characters, who are willing to believe in the power of Jesus to heal them.

The lyrics also bring attention to the hierarchical structure of the community, where the social and financial status of the characters hinge on their physical wellbeing. The crippled and the afflicted are considered to be on the lower rungs of society, and their healing would not only bring them relief from their suffering but also elevate their social status. Glimpses of the social order are revealed through the use of dialect and colloquial language, which lends authenticity to the song. Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong deliver the lyrics with immense soul and emotion, creating an impact that hits the core of one's being.

I love her voice,...she had the best voice I have ever heard but since she mostly did jazz I found it difficult to find a gospel CD from her...My mother had an old LP...yes back in the day but it was a gospel record of Ms. Fitzgerald and I can't locate anything like it...I had checked amazon...does anyone know of a gospel CD available that I have overlooked???
