The Real Estate
Elliott Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Dogs eat dogs eat dogs
Move through
There′s rain inside your house
For our moods
But I don't want to live here
Even if it′s all we've got

Mr. Big got an expectation
Thinks he thinks he's my education
He said, "Don′t you think
We could make a couple of G′s"
Why don't you go for yourself
And take what′s coming to you?

I didn't want to go inside
It′s a burned out party
It's killing my pride

Just want to live with her again
Can we do that?
Even if we can′t stand to
Sleep in the same bed

Mr. Big got an expectation
Thinks he thinks he's my education
He said, "Don't you think
We could make a couple of G′s"
Why don′t you go for yourself
And take what's waiting for you?

Fetched the mail at a quarter ′til one

I think the mailman thinks I'm dumb
I think the mailman thinks me dumb

Overall Meaning

The Real Estate by Elliott Smith is a song that explores the themes of disillusionment with domestic life, the struggle to find meaning and purpose in society, and the desire to escape the mundane existence of suburban life. The lyrics "Dogs eat dogs eat dogs, move through, there's rain inside your house, for our moods" paint a bleak picture of the environment in which the singer is living. The reference to dogs eating each other implies a competitive and cutthroat society in which individuals are pitted against each other, and there is no sense of community or compassion. The "rain inside your house" could be interpreted as a metaphor for the emotional turmoil and instability that the singer feels within themselves.

The lyrics go on to describe the character of "Mr. Big," who is an authority figure that the singer feels pressured to conform to. Mr. Big represents societal expectations and the pressure to succeed at all costs. He suggests that they could make "a couple of G's" (thousand dollars) together, implying that financial gain is the only measure of success. However, the singer rejects this notion, telling Mr. Big to go for himself and take what's coming to him. This could be seen as a rejection of the capitalist ethos that prioritizes wealth and power above all else.

The final lines of the song deal with the singer's struggle to find a sense of purpose and meaning in life. They fetch the mail at a quarter 'til one, implying that they have no real responsibilities or obligations. However, they feel that the mailman thinks they are dumb, which highlights their insecurity and sense of inadequacy. The desire to "live with her again" is a nostalgic longing for a simpler time, but as the singer admits, they may not be able to stand sleeping in the same bed. This is a poignant and painful recognition that even when we seek to escape the mundane, we often find that the grass is not always greener on the other side.

This track was a mystery that was found as Larry Crane was finishing up New Moon and I was searching his vaults for unreleased tracks to include on this project. The song seemingly came out of nowhere at the perfect time, and appeared to be a one off attempt that no one knew existed, or had ever even heard before, found unlabeled in the middle of an untitled DAT tape. It was a surreal experience that I will never forget, finding this lost track and hearing Elliott’s voice echo through the studio playback as Larry packed up the Jackpot! studio that Elliott had once helped him to build to move to its new location. It wasn’t until later, when Larry was mixing it, that we realized this was a solo reworking of a song originally done by his high school band called Stranger Than Fiction that appeared on a cassette that was passed around to our friends at Lincoln High School in downtown Portland.

I think it's amazing that the basis of the song comes from his HIGH SCHOOL BAND. I heard a LOT of my friends' bands during high school, and many of them were talented with their instruments. But the songwriting was not on par with this by Any stretch of the imagination.

And these don't sound like flukes. Looking at his catalogue his song crafting, both lyrics and music, grows so much. But it's nuts to see how high the bar was placed when this level of creativity comes along in a person.

Holy shit that guitar solo. I mean, I knew Elliott was an amazing guitar player... but wow! Seriously the gnarliest thing he's ever done.

spencer wile

Yeah, he can solo quite soulfully.

Only other time I can think of that he soloed like this is the Shooting Star intro. Even in Heatmiser, this kind of thing just didn't happen. I don't think most guitarists could conceive of having this much technical skill and not being a total jackoff about it. He just knew he cared most about the composition, I guess.

+elmntree3 And this was early early Elliott, too. The guy was a truly phenomenal musician.
