Abused
Elliott Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now that everybody's worn the expression
Not that you wanted to use
It seems untrue now
But the funniest thing is
It fits you now
To a perfect T

You may never understand this affliction
Although you feel the effects you feel
Bruised now, body and mind you feel
Used now, almost all of the time
Been abused
Abused
Abused

Sunday morning in the aisle with my brother
Watching the men in black tell the youths how
You're supposed to behave, and tell the truth now
You don't know what you're saying
We've been abused
Abused
Abused
Abused
Abused
Abused
Abused

Other people see some evil intention
But the closer you get
The more you get confused how
Why does everyone know

Been abused now
Didn't want it to show

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Elliott Smith’s song “Abused” are particularly cryptic, but they seem to deal with abuse, both physical and emotional, and the way survivors feel afterward. “Now that everybody’s worn the expression / Not that you wanted to use”, he sings, suggesting that after someone has suffered abuse, they may take on certain facial expressions or behaviors that were not present before. These may be difficult for others to understand, and can create feelings of isolation or disconnection. Smith sings, “It seems untrue now / But the funniest thing is / It fits you now / To a perfect T”, implying that even though the behaviors seem foreign, they fit the survivor so well that they become a part of them.

The second verse shifts to focus more specifically on physical abuse. Smith sings, “You may never understand this affliction / Although you feel the effects you feel / Bruised now, body and mind you feel / Used now, almost all of the time / Been abused / Abused / Abused”. Here, the singer seems to be saying that even though outsiders may not be able to fully understand what it is like to experience abuse, they can see the affect it has on the person both physically and mentally. The repetition of the word “abused” emphasizes the lasting nature of the abuse.

In the third verse, Smith describes a scene from a Sunday morning in church where he and his brother witness authority figures telling youths how to behave. He sings, “You don’t know what you’re saying / We’ve been abused / Abused / Abused / Abused / Abused / Abused / Abused”. The repetition here underscores how pervasive the issue of abuse is, suggesting that it is something many have experienced. When he sings “We’ve been abused,” it feels like a collective call, a cry for recognition and understanding from others who have undergone similar experiences.

All of us listening to this song are in it together. Keep your head up! I know you are strong, whoever you are reading this.

I obviously support and appreciate the sentiment of your comment, but sometimes when I see someone write something under an Elliott video like "all of us listening to this song are in it together", I feel like saying "you know not all Elliott fans are in a bad place in life or suffering from mental health issues?"

I know your comment is in good faith, so I don't want to seem like I'm ripping into it - sorry. It can just sometimes be a bit annoying to see people continue to fall into this stereotypical idea that his music is only "sad and deppressing" and is meant only for "sad and depressed" people to listen to. Elliott was an amazing musician who wrote some of the best songs in existence - anyone can love his music!

Not all people who love Elliott is in pain but he speaks deeply and resonates with those of us who are. And like op said all of you are stronger then you realize.
