Sticks and Stones
Elliott Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Wiped out in the city slick
Another sick rock and roller acting like a dick
Needin' cash
Burnin' through the trash
That piles up in this place
And fills up behind my empty face
Full of things that I'm not to do
You come over with all of your friends
And all their opinions I don't want to know
And I'm lookin' over my shoulder
Bookin' away with nowhere to go

I'm running down to the corner lot
It's 45 past 2 I almost forgot to show
I got a date to make with Mr. So-and-So
After which
I won't care when you all start to bitch
And moan about being alone
You come over with all of your friends
And all their opinions I don't want to know
And I'm lookin' over my shoulder
Bookin' away with nowhere to go

Can't you just leave me alone?
You've already thrown all the sticks and stones you had to send my way
Well can't you just leave it at that?
And spare us both the bother
'Cause I just bounced back anyway
I got nothin' that I want to do
More than make another sonnet fuck you to play
Whenever you make my life cliche
So to fit in some little box with all the labelled shit
You would say to keep confusion away

You come over with all of your friends
And all their opinions I don't want to know
And I'm lookin' over my shoulder
Bookin' away with nowhere to go
You come over with all of your friends
And all their opinions I don't want to know

And I'm lookin' over my shoulder
Bookin' away...

Overall Meaning

The song Sticks and Stones by Elliott Smith can be interpreted as a commentary on the rock 'n' roll lifestyle and the pressure put on musicians to constantly produce new music and stay relevant. The opening lines describe someone who is struggling in the city, most likely a rock musician who is burnt out and broke. The singer acknowledges that they are "full of things that I'm not to do," which could suggest they are trying to resist the temptations of drugs and other destructive behaviors.

The second verse describes the singer trying to escape from the pressures of being around people who have opinions about their life and music. They feel trapped and want to get away, but they have a commitment they must attend. The chorus is a plea for the people in the singer's life to stop harassing them. They have already "thrown all the sticks and stones" they had to send the singer's way, and it's time to move on.

The final verse is a defiant statement against conforming to the expectations of others. The singer says they have nothing they want to do more than make "another sonnet fuck you to play," which could be interpreted as a rejection of society's norms and expectations. The singer wants to be free to create art in their own way without being boxed in by labels or expectations.

Every song is breathtaking, every one.

"Looking Over My Shoulder" is the correct title.  Some fan made up the title "Sticks and Stones" when it was first leaked, before we knew what Elliott actually named it.

@ABCDyeahyeahyeah

The real title is actually "not certain" according to Larry Crane in the new moon liner notes.

“Sonic fuck you to play””. That is the fuckin line man.

@Dani92670

He's saying "More than make another song and fuck you to play". Just helping you out as I'm Polish, as well. We have to stick together in this dangerous world. It might also be what the YTuber has above in the descript as the lyrics but I listened many times and think it's what I believe it is. Give it a listen and see what you think.

@mooninites755

nice pictures in there

@tzohfeld

It's called looking over my shoulder not sticks and stones which is why you recognize the lyrics
