From 1972 until 1975, when this record was made, Santiago’s main gig was as ‘crooner’ in Ed Lincoln’s Orchestra. As Lincoln’s long time friend and cohort, it was obvious that Durval Ferreira, (in his capacity as Artistic Director at CID) would be one of the first to recognise the extraordinary talent of the young singer; thus Ferreira signed a deal with Santiago to make this album, supported by absolutely the best players and arrangers, and singing songs by Brazil’s best composers. ‘Emilio Santiago’ is one of the jewels in the crown of the CID catalogue. whatmusic.com is very proud to present Santiago’s classic, reissued in its original form for the first time.
Trocando Em Miúdos
Emílio Santiago Lyrics

Não me valeu
As nossas melhores lembranças
The song Trocando em Miúdos by Emílio Santiago is a poignant breakup song that reveals the emotions of a person parting ways with a lover. The lyrics tell the story of a person who is leaving their partner and giving them some items as a form of remembrance of their time together. The first stanza mentions leaving a symbol of faith to the partner, but also keeping a memento of the relationship - a Pixinguinha album. The singer then tells the partner to keep the remnants of their life together - shadows of their former selves, love marks on their sheets, and cherished memories.
The second stanza is more direct, telling the partner to forget the hope of fixing things and to sell off or melt their engagement ring if they want. The singer, however, is not going to give the pleasure of seeing them cry or hold them accountable for the damage they caused. They even suggest a new lover can help out with rent and request that the partner returns the Neruda book they never read. The song ends with the singer closing the door quietly, taking only their ID and some sadness, and realizing they should have left earlier.
Throughout the song, Emílio Santiago’s emotional and soothing voice complements the lyrics perfectly. The song, with its relatable story of breakups, resonated with many listeners, making it one of his most popular songs.
