Sandé made her singing career debut in 2009 after appearing on the track she wrote for Chipmunk's first debut single, "Diamond Rings". The single charted at No. 6 on the UK Singles Charts, making it Chipmunk and Sandé's first ever Top 10 Hit. She later appeared on another single singing guest vocals, after collaborating with Wiley on his comeback single "Never Be Your Woman", the single charted at number-eight on the UK Singles Charts becoming Sandé's second consecutive Top 10 Single.
Sandé decided against using the name Adele Sandé, due to Adele's growing success, so used her middle name instead. She revealed: "I changed it as soon as Adele came out. I just thought, 'You've kind of taken the [name] now', so I went with my middle name. She was just getting bigger and bigger, so I thought I just really need it."
A former medical student, Sandé appeared as a guest vocalist on Professor Green's 2011 UK #1 single Read All About It and soon went on to achieve her own chart success with her first solo release Heaven, which debuted in the UK Singles Chart at #2. Her debut album Our Version of Events was released on 12th February 2012. The album includes the singles Next To Me, Daddy and My Kind Of Love.
Before branching out on her own Sandé had already had a taste of chart success having collaborated with rapper Chipmunk on his song Diamond Rings, and then with Wiley on Never Be Your Woman. She has also written for or collaborated with artists including Let Go, Let It Rain, Susan Boyle and Cheryl Cole.
In a major feature in their Saturday Review paper, The Times declared Emeli Sandé "The Voice of 2012". The New York Times said “Ms. Sandé has a perspective-altering voice, clear and brassy and weapons-grade”. Fellow artists have also proclaimed their admiration, including Alicia Keys, “I just love her style and her flow – super raw.”, and Adele, "How incredible is she?".
Our Version of Events is the UK's biggest selling debut album of 2012.
Sandé appeared at the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony. She performed Abide with Me

Give Me Something
Emeli Sandé Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I guess I got caught up
In the rough and tumble
I didn't mean to cause no trouble
At all, at all
I'm just so sick
Of the dream they're selling
It doesn't feel like heaven
So give me something
Give me something
Give me something
I can believe in
Give me something
Come on, give me something
Please give me something
I can believe in
I fell in love with fear
Oh God forgive me
Have mercy on me
Oh it's not easy here
Hey please excuse the mess
See, I just wanna feel
Oh I mean really really feel
It all, it all
So give me something
Please God, give me something
Give me something
I can believe in
Give me something
Come on, give me something
Give me something
I can believe in
Oh yeah, you got people
But people change their minds
And people change their hearts
With the seasons
And then the songs
They too must end
So tell me now, my friend
Where does that leave us?
Give me something
Come on, give me something
Oh please God, give me something
I can believe in
Give me something, anything
Give me something
Give me something
I can believe in
Give me something
Give me something
Honey something
I can believe in
The lyrics to Emeli Sandé's song "Give Me Something" express a deep longing for authenticity and meaning in a world that often feels disconnected and artificial. The opening lines, "I guess I got caught up in the rough and tumble, I didn't mean to cause no trouble at all," suggest that the singer has become entangled in a chaotic and disingenuous environment, perhaps losing sight of their true self in the process.
The singer expresses frustration with the superficiality of the dreams that are being sold to them, saying, "I'm just so sick of the dream they're selling, it doesn't feel like heaven at all." This suggests a disillusionment with societal ideals and an overwhelming desire for something more genuine and fulfilling.
The chorus serves as a plea for something real and meaningful to hold onto: "Give me something, give me something, give me something I can believe in." It reflects a deep yearning for a sense of purpose and truth that goes beyond superficiality or temporary satisfaction.
In the second verse, the singer confesses to having fallen in love with fear, potentially alluding to a comfort zone defined by uncertainty or negativity. They yearn for a genuine emotional experience, saying, "See, I just wanna feel, oh I mean really really feel it all." This further emphasizes the desire for authenticity and a genuine connection with emotions.
The bridge of the song introduces the idea that people are fickle and inconsistent, and that even the songs that provide solace or understanding eventually come to an end. This leaves the singer questioning the stability of relationships and where that ultimately leaves them.
Overall, "Give Me Something" is a heartfelt plea for authenticity, meaning, and genuine connection in a world that often feels artificial and disconnected.
