Sandé made her singing career debut in 2009 after appearing on the track she wrote for Chipmunk's first debut single, "Diamond Rings". The single charted at No. 6 on the UK Singles Charts, making it Chipmunk and Sandé's first ever Top 10 Hit. She later appeared on another single singing guest vocals, after collaborating with Wiley on his comeback single "Never Be Your Woman", the single charted at number-eight on the UK Singles Charts becoming Sandé's second consecutive Top 10 Single.
Sandé decided against using the name Adele Sandé, due to Adele's growing success, so used her middle name instead. She revealed: "I changed it as soon as Adele came out. I just thought, 'You've kind of taken the [name] now', so I went with my middle name. She was just getting bigger and bigger, so I thought I just really need it."
A former medical student, Sandé appeared as a guest vocalist on Professor Green's 2011 UK #1 single Read All About It and soon went on to achieve her own chart success with her first solo release Heaven, which debuted in the UK Singles Chart at #2. Her debut album Our Version of Events was released on 12th February 2012. The album includes the singles Next To Me, Daddy and My Kind Of Love.
Before branching out on her own Sandé had already had a taste of chart success having collaborated with rapper Chipmunk on his song Diamond Rings, and then with Wiley on Never Be Your Woman. She has also written for or collaborated with artists including Let Go, Let It Rain, Susan Boyle and Cheryl Cole.
In a major feature in their Saturday Review paper, The Times declared Emeli Sandé "The Voice of 2012". The New York Times said “Ms. Sandé has a perspective-altering voice, clear and brassy and weapons-grade”. Fellow artists have also proclaimed their admiration, including Alicia Keys, “I just love her style and her flow – super raw.”, and Adele, "How incredible is she?".
Our Version of Events is the UK's biggest selling debut album of 2012.
Sandé appeared at the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony. She performed Abide with Me

Hey yeah, yeah, yeah
Mhmm
Mhmm
I feel it running through my veins
Guess I'm already bleeding for it
All four chambers got a different kinda beat for it
Try keep it quiet but it's banging like a drum
And they're shaking up my bones
And tearing up my ligaments
I'm still tryna act like, nah it ain't that serious
But I'm deep in my womb and I'm kicking on the diaphram
Try not seizure, blades like Caesar
Funny when I feel the choke of the umbilical
My soul gets deeper, songs real spiritual
Cross around my neck and a crystal in my pocket
My love is the bomb and forgiveness is the rocket
Which army gon' stop it, my faith rises up
Even while pulse droppin'
I roll it on my heart so it's never forgotten
You're only begotten
The sun and the moon and the stars, all been watching
Selah, they've been watching
Selah
Hey Selah
Selah
Selah
They've been watching, Selah, Selah
Selah, Selah, Selah, Selah, Selah
Selah, Selah, Selah
Selah, Selah, Selah, Selah, Selah
The lyrics of Emeli Sandé's song "Selah" portray the intense and transformative experience of being consumed by passion and purpose. The opening lines, "I feel it running through my veins, guess I'm already bleeding for it," suggest that the singer is deeply invested in something, perhaps a cause or a creative endeavor. The reference to "all four chambers" having a different beat indicates that every aspect of their being is aligned and driven by this passion.
The lyrics further describe the struggle to contain this inner fire, as the singer tries to hold their breath and keep it quiet but fails. The imagery of their bones shaking and ligaments tearing illustrates the physical and emotional impact of this all-consuming drive. Despite their attempts to downplay the significance of it all, the intensity continues to grow, symbolized by the kicking in the womb and the presence of seizures and choking sensations.
The singer finds solace in spirituality, as indicated by the mention of a cross around their neck and a crystal in their pocket. The love they possess is described as a "bomb," suggesting its powerful and explosive nature, while forgiveness becomes the means of liberation and ascension. The lyrics also touch on the idea of divine observation, with the sun, moon, and stars watching over the singer's journey.
Overall, "Selah" delves into the depths of passion, struggle, and spiritual connection, painting a vivid picture of someone completely consumed by their purpose.
