Sandé made her singing career debut in 2009 after appearing on the track she wrote for Chipmunk's first debut single, "Diamond Rings". The single charted at No. 6 on the UK Singles Charts, making it Chipmunk and Sandé's first ever Top 10 Hit. She later appeared on another single singing guest vocals, after collaborating with Wiley on his comeback single "Never Be Your Woman", the single charted at number-eight on the UK Singles Charts becoming Sandé's second consecutive Top 10 Single.
Sandé decided against using the name Adele Sandé, due to Adele's growing success, so used her middle name instead. She revealed: "I changed it as soon as Adele came out. I just thought, 'You've kind of taken the [name] now', so I went with my middle name. She was just getting bigger and bigger, so I thought I just really need it."
A former medical student, Sandé appeared as a guest vocalist on Professor Green's 2011 UK #1 single Read All About It and soon went on to achieve her own chart success with her first solo release Heaven, which debuted in the UK Singles Chart at #2. Her debut album Our Version of Events was released on 12th February 2012. The album includes the singles Next To Me, Daddy and My Kind Of Love.
Before branching out on her own Sandé had already had a taste of chart success having collaborated with rapper Chipmunk on his song Diamond Rings, and then with Wiley on Never Be Your Woman. She has also written for or collaborated with artists including Let Go, Let It Rain, Susan Boyle and Cheryl Cole.
In a major feature in their Saturday Review paper, The Times declared Emeli Sandé "The Voice of 2012". The New York Times said “Ms. Sandé has a perspective-altering voice, clear and brassy and weapons-grade”. Fellow artists have also proclaimed their admiration, including Alicia Keys, “I just love her style and her flow – super raw.”, and Adele, "How incredible is she?".
Our Version of Events is the UK's biggest selling debut album of 2012.
Sandé appeared at the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony. She performed Abide with Me

Sweet Architect
Emeli Sandé Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
My bones are heavy and my soul's a mess
Can't find my address
Build me up, build me up
Oh sweet architect
I've been lonely since the day you left
So come and find my address
Build me up, build me up
Guess we've got deep love, but it's a deeper ocean
Dear God help us keep floating
Some choke and some panic
See, some got a boat, but most haven't
Oh dear heaven, you know we're tryin' make it
Dear heaven, you know it's complicated
We've got deep love, but it's a deeper ocean
We've got deep love
Oh sweet architect
My bones are heavy and my soul's a mess
Can't find my address
Build me up, build me up
Oh sweet architect
I've been lonely since the day you left
Come and find my address
Build me up, build me up
Help me, we're still hearing, we're still breathing
Knee deep with the deep kneeling
We stay brave looking, we've been damaged
See most got a heart, but some's savage
Oh dear heaven, I hope you're up to something
'Cause dear heaven, this just can't be for nothing
We're still here, we're still breathing
We're still here
Oh sweet architect
My bones are heavy and my soul's a mess
Can't find my address
Build me up, build me up
Oh sweet architect
I've been lonely since the day you left
Come and find my dress
Build me up, build me up
Build me up, build me up
Build me up, build me up
Build me up, build me up
Build me up, build me up
Build me up, build me up
Build me up, build me up
Build me up, build me up
Build me up, build me up
Oh sweet architect
My bones are heavy and my soul's a mess
Can't find my address
Build me up, build me up
Oh sweet architect
I've been lonely since the day you left
Come and find my address
Build me up, build me up
The lyrics to Emeli Sandé's "Sweet Architect" convey a plea for emotional and spiritual renewal. The metaphor of the "sweet architect" is used to symbolize a higher power or a guiding force that can build up and restore the singer who feels burdened by the weight of their own struggles. The first verse speaks to the heaviness of their bones and the messiness of their soul, indicating a deep sense of turmoil and longing for stability. The repeated refrain to "build me up" highlights the desire for strength and restoration, as well as a yearning to find one's sense of self and purpose.
The mention of being lonely since the day the architect left suggests a sense of abandonment or loss, emphasizing the need for connection and support. The lyrics also touch on the complexities of love, likening it to a deep ocean that can either lift us up or drown us. The plea for help from "Dear God" and "dear heaven" reflects a reliance on faith and a search for guidance in navigating life's struggles and uncertainties. The acknowledgment that love is both powerful and challenging underscores the depth of emotions and experiences that shape the singer's journey.
The second verse delves into themes of resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity. The imagery of being "knee deep with the deep kneeling" suggests a state of vulnerability and humility, yet also a steadfast commitment to weathering difficulties. The contrast between those who have a heart and those who are savage highlights the moral and emotional complexities of human nature. The singer's hope that their efforts will lead to something meaningful underscores a sense of purpose and determination to overcome obstacles.
The repetition of the chorus throughout the song reinforces the central plea for renewal and emotional healing. The final lines, with the repeated call to "build me up," express a deep longing for restoration and a yearning to find one's way back to wholeness. Overall, the lyrics of "Sweet Architect" convey a profound sense of vulnerability, hope, and resilience in the face of personal struggles, encapsulating the universal human experience of seeking strength and guidance in times of difficulty.
