Sandé made her singing career debut in 2009 after appearing on the track she wrote for Chipmunk's first debut single, "Diamond Rings". The single charted at No. 6 on the UK Singles Charts, making it Chipmunk and Sandé's first ever Top 10 Hit. She later appeared on another single singing guest vocals, after collaborating with Wiley on his comeback single "Never Be Your Woman", the single charted at number-eight on the UK Singles Charts becoming Sandé's second consecutive Top 10 Single.
Sandé decided against using the name Adele Sandé, due to Adele's growing success, so used her middle name instead. She revealed: "I changed it as soon as Adele came out. I just thought, 'You've kind of taken the [name] now', so I went with my middle name. She was just getting bigger and bigger, so I thought I just really need it."
A former medical student, Sandé appeared as a guest vocalist on Professor Green's 2011 UK #1 single Read All About It and soon went on to achieve her own chart success with her first solo release Heaven, which debuted in the UK Singles Chart at #2. Her debut album Our Version of Events was released on 12th February 2012. The album includes the singles Next To Me, Daddy and My Kind Of Love.
Before branching out on her own Sandé had already had a taste of chart success having collaborated with rapper Chipmunk on his song Diamond Rings, and then with Wiley on Never Be Your Woman. She has also written for or collaborated with artists including Let Go, Let It Rain, Susan Boyle and Cheryl Cole.
In a major feature in their Saturday Review paper, The Times declared Emeli Sandé "The Voice of 2012". The New York Times said “Ms. Sandé has a perspective-altering voice, clear and brassy and weapons-grade”. Fellow artists have also proclaimed their admiration, including Alicia Keys, “I just love her style and her flow – super raw.”, and Adele, "How incredible is she?".
Our Version of Events is the UK's biggest selling debut album of 2012.
Sandé appeared at the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony. She performed Abide with Me

This Much Is True
Emeli Sandé Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Too many channels on the television
Our children dance like they've seen it all
I went on the Internet and I got myself a thousand friends, funny
No one ever seems to call
But darling, I am
Very much in love with you
At least I can
Tell you that this much is true
Yeah, this much is true
Yeah, this much is true, yeah
This much is true, yeah
This much is true, yeah
Am I in or out of fashion?
What really killed Michael Jackson?
And is disco really dead?
Oh, I could spend a lifetime guessing
I got way too many questions
I'd rather let you know instead
That darling, I am
Very much in love with you
Yes, darling
At least I can
Tell you that this much is true
Yeah, this much is true
Yeah, this much is true, yeah
This much is true, yeah
This much is true, true
Oh, this world can be so confusing
When even good men choose to lie
I don't know if I'm winning or losing
But I know that I
That I'll be darkening
Yes darling, I am
Very much in love with you
Hey darling
At least I can
Tell you that this much is true
This much is true, yeah
This much is true, yeah
This much is true, yeah
This much is true, true
I'm not a prophet, I'm no mathematician
At best I'm just guessing
I really haven't got a clue
No, I don't have all the answers for you
Just know that I adore you
And that this much is true
The lyrics to Emeli Sandé's song "This Much Is True" explore the sense of uncertainty and confusion that can arise from the state of the world and the overwhelming amount of information and opinions available. The opening lines criticize politicians and the constant stream of media on television, suggesting that they cannot be trusted and only contribute to the confusion. The mention of children dancing as if they have seen it all implies a jadedness and loss of innocence that comes from being exposed to too much too soon. The line about getting a thousand friends on the internet but no one ever calling speaks to the superficiality and disconnectedness of virtual connections.
However, amidst all the chaos and uncertainty, the singer finds solace in their love for someone. They declare their love, emphasizing that at least they can be sure of their feelings and the honesty of their affection. The repetition of the phrase "this much is true" reinforces the sincerity of their declaration. The second verse continues with a self-reflection on the singer's own doubts and uncertainties, questioning their place in fashion and pondering about the mysteries of life. Yet, they express a preference for sharing their love and emotions with their partner rather than dwelling on these uncertainties.
The chorus emphasizes the confusion and challenges of the world, describing it as "so confusing" and unsure of winning or losing. However, the singer reaffirms their love for the partner, promising to be there for them even without having all the answers. The closing lines acknowledge the singer's own limitations, admitting to not being a prophet or mathematician and reflecting on their lack of certainty. Despite this, they express their adoration for their partner, reinforcing that their love is the one thing they can be sure of.
