Leaving On A Jetplane
Engelbert Humperdinck Lyrics

I'm standin' here outside your door
I hate to wake you up to say goodbye
But the dawn is breakin' it's early morn
The taxi's waitin' he's blowin' his horn
Already I'm so lonesome I could die
So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
Cause I'm leavin' on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go
There's so many times I've let you down
So many times I've played around
I tell you now, they don't mean a thing
Every place I go, I'll think of you
Every song I sing, I'll sing for you
When I come back, I'll bring your wedding ring
So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
Cause I'm leavin' on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go
Now the time has come to leave you
One more time let me kiss you
Close your eyes I'll be on my way
Dream about the days to come
When I won't have to leave alone
About the times, I won't have to say
So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
Cause I'm leavin' on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh baby, I hate to go
Cause I'm leavin' on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go
The song "Leaving on a Jet Plane" by Engelbert Humperdinck is a classic love song that tells the story of a man who is leaving his lover behind to travel somewhere far away. The song begins with the protagonist getting ready to leave, with all his bags packed and the taxi waiting outside. He hates to wake his lover up to say goodbye, but he knows that he has to go. The dawn is breaking and the taxi is waiting, and he feels so lonely already that he could die.
Despite his sadness and reluctance to leave, the protagonist tells his lover that he will always think of her wherever he goes and that every song he sings will be for her. He promises to bring back a wedding ring when he returns and asks her to wait for him. He asks her to hold him tight as he knows that he is leaving a part of himself behind.
As the time comes for him to leave, he asks his lover to close her eyes and think about the days to come when they can be together again. He promises to dream about those days too, so that they can both hold onto the hope of being together once more. Despite his hesitance to go and the sadness he feels, he knows that he must leave for now and hopes that his lover will wait for him.

Wonderful singer of all time.

I've listened to almost all versions of this great song, though beautiful expressions encompassed by the lyricist, the great country singer, John Denver and his version is sweet too, but none is better than this version by baritone singer Engelbert. I have no hesitation in saying, that this is the best one and this cover version is even better than the original one and the one by Tom Jones. Waah Engelbert, waah!
