Too Beautiful To Last

Those moments warm and tender
Was it to beautiful to last?
The love we shared together
The dreams we dared together
Was it to beautiful to last?
Walking hand in hand
Were dreaming of a land
Where love reposes
But castles made of sand
Like winter roses
Are fated to die
My darling, like you and I
My darling...
Where are those sweet Septembers
The joy my heart remembers?
Lost in the shadows of the past
The rainbow watched above you
The sacred words, I love you
Why did the dream go by so fast?
Walking hand in hand
The dawn discloses we
Were dreaming of a land
Where love reposes
But castles made of sand
Like winter roses
Are fated to die
My darling, like you and I
My darling...
Where are those sweet Septembers
The joy my heart remembers?
Lost in the shadows of the past
The rainbow watched above you
The sacred words, I love you
Why did that dream go by so fast?
Was it to beautiful...
Was it to beautiful to last?
Engelbert Humperdinck's "Too Beautiful To Last" is a touching and nostalgic ballad about a love that was too good to be true. The song is a reflection of the singer's past relationship and the memories it left behind. The first verse speaks of the "days of autumn splendor" and the "moments warm and tender," suggesting the relationship reached its peak during a beautiful time in their lives. However, the chorus questions whether the love they shared was "too beautiful to last." The lyrics suggest that as beautiful as things were, their love was not meant to be permanent, as "castles made of sand like winter roses are fated to die" just like their love did.
The second verse continues to reminisce about lost love, questioning where the sweet Septembers and joy have gone. The lyrics mention that the love was like a dream and that they were "dreaming of a land where love reposes." The chorus repeats and emphasizes that their love was too beautiful to last, leaving the singer to wonder why such an amazing love had to end.
Overall, Engelbert Humperdinck's lyrics to "Too Beautiful To Last" are a beautiful and introspective reflection on love and loss. The song captures the bittersweet nature of nostalgia, reflecting on beautiful memories while mourning the loss of something that could not be sustained.
