@Gaëlyr The opening cutscene's entire point is to precisely detail the history of the world and what makes each Age unique and important. The First Flame introduced disparity, ending the universal era of identical stone lands, trees, and dragons. If Seath predated the Flame as a scaleless, fleshy, and likely mortal dragon, his entire existence would completely invalidate the entire premise of the Age of Ancients and the disparity the First Flame introduced to the universe.

The Stone Dragon of Ash Lake does have some differences, such as the somewhat beaked face and the rings on his horns, but overall, he's the closest to what the Age of Ancients and its pre-Fire dragons embodied. He has the general body proportions, the ability to sit upright with a straight neck, the zen pose, the four wings and the precise shape and build of the wings, the key detail that he's a stone dragon, more so than the rest in the game, and the ability to outright tap into the gray fog with things like the dragon eye. As such, these features indicate what being close to an original, non-flawed dragon entails, and thus the Everlasting Dragons seen in the intro cinematic are indeed the benchmark for a genuine Age of Ancients, pre-Fire, original dragon. To lack these details is to be distanced from the pre-disparity era, and to increasingly be unlikely to have existed before or even right after the Flame.

The (real) ancient dragon of Dark Souls 2 lacks the type of horns, the horn positioning, the number of wings, the body proportions for anything bipedal, the zen pose, etc. Midir comes closer, but he too starts to have distinctly different horns and, though he has four wings, a different build to said wings. Midir is also quite quadrupedal despite having some proportions that at least help him temporarily balance on his hind legs for a fire breath sweep. Furthermore, Midir is said to have been raised by the gods, meaning he was born after the Age of Ancients was thoroughly over and the Age of Fire was in full swing, thus his physical differences are likely the result of the post-Flame disparity.

The wyverns are clearly meant to have almost no stone scales (some might even have none, explaining the rare drop in DS1), and are even vulnerable to the bleed status effect, indicating a massive loss of their stony nature. Various pieces of gear note that they're basically devolved failures of dragons, akin to serpents, and the numerous wyvern head trophies in Anor Londo suggest that wyverns do die. Only the more stony dragon descendants, perhaps akin to Sinh, can apparently be invigorated with any of the Ringed City's "smidgeon of life" Abyssal energy to do anything again.

Domhnall is who mentions that the Stone Dragon is said to be a survivor of the ancient dragons, and the Dragon Head and Torso Stones show that the dragon can bestow at least some element of the Everlasting Dragons that those seeking to be perpetual chase after. Through Domhnall, the stones, and the actions of those who actively seek a way to, a la Seath, chase after the power of the stone scales, the Stone Dragon is confirmed to have this authenticity, of having at least some connection to what a pristine dragon, unmarred by disparity, is. To transform with the stones, and take on traces of the Stone Dragon's likeness, is one of the key steps to reaching the state of being that the ancient dragons had.

Kalameet may have always had the tie to Dark, rather than being corrupted, and Gough certainly doesn't state or imply that Kalameet has had a recent change of any kind. Sinh suffers from poison, but his body doesn't seem to have changed to resemble something poisonous or skeletal, he just still has a terrible amount of it inflicted upon him.

Not really, the cutscene isn’t meant to be detailed so wouldn’t bother with an exception.

Also, he isn’t « considered to be amongst them », he is amongst them, that’s what the text (and the intro) plainly state.

And the stone dragon in ash lake I don’t know why you keep turning back to it when it’s not even that close to the ancient dragons of the intro with its beak and mono jaw and stubby body, midir and the corpse seen in DS2 are the only dragons that come close to those seen in the intro, by comparison that one isn’t even close.

Also, the wyverns/drakes/whatever, as told by DS1 (since they drop dragon scales) and DS3 (since their immortal heads are used as the ringed knights’ shield) do not lack the stone scales per se, at least not entirely.

… By whom ? In the game, he’s never acknowledged to be an ancient dragon, he’s ever lasting for sure, immortal, so he still corresponds to the way of life of dragons before the flame… at least partially, but he isn’t an ancient or everlasting dragon, unlike seath and kalameet.

Also the dragon in ash lake isn’t even close to the size or proportions of the ancient dragons of the intro, though I guess it is pretty hard to see when he’s in his zen pose in the game.

In all those cases, it’d be « preserved until they got corrupted », by darkness and/or poison.

The thing that bothers me most I think is that you’re trying to pick up on contextual clues that can be framed lots of ways, to contradict what is plainly stated. I get why not everyone is as autistically prudent on the lore as I am, but that’s something I’m always very reluctant to engage in, I think the only exception were the hollows of londor because there’s a literal contradiction even if I take the texts for what they say.

Dracons/dracos are the mammal

Dragons are the wolves

Wyverns are the coyotes

Dragon & wyvern --> draconis
Dragon =/= wyvern.

Also, using the word for 6-limbed helps avoid the dragon culture confusion of the words. Because all the dragon relatives have a short specific name that can convey a specific concept or ideal. But 6 limbs being that the word was DERIVED from draconis to specifically mean them for a brief time, was initially used for them until it was broadened out and the def changed to the modern def to mean literally anything. So now some people want to pull a Tolkien and reuse the word to specifically mean 6ers, because they don't have a short, sweet, specific word that specifically and ONLY means them.

So that's also part of the reason people keep it to mean that one. Also many falsely use the modern definition of draco (latin) and drakon and use it as another word for dragon, when those words did NOT mean dragon until modernly, with the first being a specific type of large serpents with the water (Greek word drakon in this case) and the latter word "draco" and evert latin variation being a catch all term for serpent creature. Dragon DERIVES from it, but is NOT a direct translation. Yes the word wyvern was coined early 16 century, but the word used prior was viper and draco, because again, draco is NOT the same word as dragon in it's original contextual and written sense until modernly. Someone recently tried to argue they weren't using a fallacy by going this wrote and incorrectly said what a fallacy was. To be specific they used both a red herring and etymology fallacy (in the latter's early definition usage, not it's modern) when we talked about this. They either misquoted me and/or took my words out of context, and/or misdirected the argument.

I am hoping you will NOT do the same. I am NOT arguing they are NOT related, but to say they are one in the sense a chimp is a ethnicity of human, is not correct. They are ALL Dracos. But they are all not dragons.

Also, in the lore storm drake isn't a dragon, so in game it's not a dragon.

Seems like most of them either fall under Wyverns or "True dragons".

For the record a "true dragon" is simply classified as a dragon with at least 6 limbs, 4 legs and 2 separated wings or 2 legs 2 arms and 2 wings (no clue why they'really called "true" dragons but I guess they are).

Wyvern is characterized by having only 4 limbs, 2 hind legs and 2 fore limb wings.

Example: Dragon god, Kalameet, sinh, midir, and the ancient dragons of elden ring are all true dragons. Interestingly magma wyrms are also ironically true dragons, in fact a "wyrm" is supposed to be a dragon with no limbs just I bigger meaner snake. And a "drake" is supposed to be a dragon with 4 legs/ 2 legs 2 arms and no wings so the hellkite drake and blue drakes are not drakes, they're wyverns.

Dark Souls I is all over the place with it´s Dragon designs, looks like they did not want to settle on one specific style yet
but overall there seem to be several distinct breeds:

Common Ancient Dragons:
have 4 or more wings and have 4 legs, but can stand/sit upright, are all exceptionally large:
known examples: The Ash Lake Dragon (probably an infant), Seath the Scaleless, the Gaping Dragon

Lesser Ancient Dragons:
are all Quadrupedal, have 2 wings, a slender build, a spiny back and well pronounced facial structure
I´m calling them lesser, they might be just as powerful as the others but they are notably smaller and do not seem to possess the Stone Scales that characterizes the others
known examples: Kalameet and Sinh
this type of dragons seems to possess unnatural durability, because each seems to be afflicted by an ailment, yet they managed to survive with it - the Abyss in Kalameets Case and Sinh kept on living, despite seemingly being afflicted by Nitos Miasma and being impaled through the heart

The Hellkites:
2 Wings, 2 Legs, very spiny back and faces - come in various sizes and seem to be the most common type of Dragon in modern day Lordran, possibly because their larger cousins got extinct

Fake Ancient Dragon:
Fashioned by Aldia: resembles it´s cousins closely, but deviates in having only 1 pair of wings and a third eye: possibly some influence from Kalameet and or meddling from Aldia

Guardian Dragons:
Also bread by Aldia: very similar to Hellkites, spiny backs and slim body, but less pronounced horn structures - the most common Dragon Type in modern Day Drangleic and apparently also the kind with the fastest reproduction rate - thanks Aldia, you really gave the ecosystem a nudge there

Lothric Wyverns:
Origin is not entirely clear: share characteristics of Ancient Dragons as they have a similarly sturdy hide, 2 legs, 1 set of wings, very spiny heads and back, similar to Hellkites, also very large - possibly evolution/deviation from the Hellkites - were eventually domesticated by the Knights of Lothric in a similar fashion to how Aldia domesticated his Guardian Wyverns, so a possible relation with them is also not entirely out of the picture

The Oceiros Dragon:
former human turned Dragon, sharing many characteristics of Seath the Scaleless: lack of Eyes, no Scales and able to cast Sorcery as well as the ability to inflict Curses onto other beings with it´s breath
2 legs, 1 set of semi functional wings with soft skin, very slender, emaciated build with a long tail and fully functional hands and capability of speech; possible result of an attempt to create a human/dragon hybrid being, based on the stored research data of Seath the Scaleless, though it´s likely that this was not the desired outcome

Hybrid Dragons:
this category is for the dragons that I struggled to categorize:
features all the dragons that have features at least one of the features of the aforementioned

-Undead Dragons: 2 wings, 4 legs, possibly quadrupedal, bulky head with little ornamentation, unlike Common Ancient Dragons - their state of undeath could have altered their appearance but comparing them to other live specimen does not yield many other similarities - they could have been a subspecies of Ancient Dragons, that after being rid of their scales became vulnerable to the curse of the Undead, like Seath is

-Storm Drake: the only dragon with Feathers, 2 legs, 2 sets of wings, has durable scales similar to ancient dragons but does not bear resemblance to either aforementioned group, has a beak like Kalameet and similar horn structure to Sinh - could be a result of a mix up of species or a rare tertiary species of Ancient Dragon

-Darkeater Midir: close resemblance to common Ancient Dragons with a few key distinctions:
4 legs, 2 sets of wings - though only the frontal one seems fully developed, large size and overall bulky build, however compared to all previous species his stance is very low to the ground, similar to most Wyverns, can however assume a bipedal stance, he also misses the characteristic long neck that the majority of all other Dragon species possess, covered in thick, durable scales with crystalline structures growing all over the body, though this might not be a natural state and these formations might be parasitic manifestations of the Abyss taking a toll on the body, possibly similar of how the primordial Crystal altered Seaths body
Ancient Dragons are named to be his forebears so a close relation is very likely, also worth pointing out: this is one of only 3 Dragons that use Sorcery and one of 2 that spew black flames

In my opinion, Midir will always be my favourite, his design is simple but at the same time amazing, and i love that his laser attack is inspired by Godzilla

@Gaëlyr If Seath always existed, then he would be such an outlier as to immediately warrant mention, as the entire notion of the Age of Ancients being uniform and lacking disparity would be shattered. Seath being born in a generation where there were still Everlasting Dragons around would make sense as to why he'd just be considered among them. In contrast, the Stone Dragon of Ash Lake is perhaps the only living specimen of a long-extinct type of dragon, and contemporary to a time when the original dragons' few other living relatives primarily consist of a subspecies that lacks legs, arms, stone, and perhaps even sapience.

The Stone Dragon of Ash Lake's striking similarity to the intro cutscene dragons even seems to be treated as proof of its authenticity among dragons. The Stone Dragon is the only dragon in the game to really get anywhere near the looks and the proportions of the peak dragons, and it can even channel the gray Age of Ancients through the eye stone it gives to those hoping to transform into dragons. It might not perfectly match them, but the potential to preserve at least some of what an Everlasting Dragon was survives in this one dragon, and its ability to help people transform with Dragon Scales even seems to depict the kind of thing Seath pursues, a vital element he feels he lacks. As such, the uniform dragons in DS1's intro probably were indeed indicative of the entire dragon population, sans Seath, and differences in their appearance, their body types, etc. were caused by the increasing disparity brought about by the First Flame.

While Seath's body features unique oddities like tendrils for legs, he still fits the bill for distinct Everlasting Dragon traits in the double jaws and (at least) two sets of wings. In contrast, Kalameet lacks the double jaws, has a single pair of wings, etc. However, what's most telling is that Kalameet might be innately affiliated with the Dark, thus implying that he was born later than Seath, at a time when disparity was becoming even more pronounced in the world. As such, it's not likely that Kalameet existed before the First Flame, or even right after the First Flame.

It doesn't have any particular fondness for humans, as its order affects all life in general, and the dragon cult stuff even notes that the dragons have the same innate tie to gold that the Golden Order does. Heck, the Elden Beast itself even sports some resemblance to Elden Ring's ancient dragons, and its name in the code is nebula dragon. I doubt Farum Azula cared for Dragon Communion when that act was the murder of dragons by non-dragons to steal their powers, not to mention that said art has no connection to the Golden Order. The building Maliketh resides in is also a major temple in the center of the remaining city, so it's doubtful that it was a niche, let alone heretical, Golden Order location.

We have no reason to believe that Godwyn's body would have ever been brought to Farum Azula. Furthermore, with the Twinbird, mother of the Deathbirds, depicted in murals all throughout the city, the Deathbirds, and their Deathblight, likely existed long before Godwyn was even born. The carvings throughout Farum Azula even depict wormfaces, indicating that even the suffering created by Deathblight existed in the ancient times long before Marika even existed, let alone had the Elden Ring. As for the dragon corpses, Farum Azula's civilization already fell -- that's the earliest known element of Farum Azula's history, as item descriptions tell us, and it was a grisly mausoleum to boot, so corpses aren't out of place there.

Some debris fallen from the sky can be found across the Lands Between, but that could simply have been sent far after the meteorite hit the already ruined civilization, scattering its crumbling debris wide across the Lands Between, though mainly in the southern half of the continent.

You know something I liked about DS2?
Dragon Aerie and the sanctum (the areas before Sinh and the Squalid Queen) were, in my opinion, the most awesome places to visit on the game. They were just so atmospheric, like you were going around a sacred shrine, or an ancient tomb.

DS3's dragon shrine was honestly pretty cool, especially once you got to the end, it felt like a pilgrimage.

The dragon areas are always, for some reason, the most fascinating.

Divine Dragon, Midir, and Placidusax are my favorites. I love how the Divine Dragon is such a mystical creature, along with the fact it has one arm like Wolf. The most unique dragon design from FromSoft. Anytime I see Midir, he is practically like a destructive force of nature, especially when he throws that massive beam. He is practically FromSoft's Godzilla. And Placidusax is like a worn out King Ghidorah. Love that 'meditating' pose it does when you first see it. Also like the way FromSoft designed its necks. One of those dragons I wish I got to see without those wounds and all its heads.

Thanks for a fabulous look at Fortissax's one remaining eye! Man, the poor guy seems to have lost his pupil entirely, and maybe even his iris, unless it's that slighly brighter, somewhat v-shaped golden section in the center of the eye. If that is indeed his iris, then Fortissax is so injured that, unlike the other ancient dragons, he can't even move his eye properly to look right in front of him. As for Placidusax, it's intriguing that he might have subtle round pupils. The "modern" dragons all have round pupils, as best observed with Greyoll, so I wonder why the dragonlord's pupils might resemble the supposedly inferior modern dragons, along with traits like the nose horn. Perhaps the ancient dragons aren't quite natural after all?

I'm also grateful for this nuanced look at all the dragons from Demon's Souls onward! In particular, I've always felt that the red and blue dragons of the Boletarian Palace have surprisingly beautiful scales, and their overall designs are great too. I'm not sure why you showed a low-res version of the Stone Dragon of Ash Lake though. I appreciate the close look at Sinh waking up, as I'm not sure if I ever noticed that he starts off surrounded by rocks and breaks them when awakening. He always looked oddly obscured before the fight fully began, and those rocks explain why.

Fortisax looks so fucking cool when he has the lightning effect all over his body active gotta be my favorite in elden ring. Though I never noticed how much like a coral reef the scarlet rot dragon looks like, the bleached growths like a dead reef but the red patched kinda looked like living coral going with the scarlet rots theme of death and rebirth.

These beasts have both witnessed and committed untold atrocities and endured unimaginable suffering, over the course of millenia. The pain of such existence is beyond our comprehension. They have long since earned their eternal rest.

Since dragon scales are supposed to be made of stone, I always liked the idea that the reason you are able to damage Midir and Kalameet is because their stone scales have been transformed by Abyss corruption into more rubbery, oily scales that you can damage with normal weapons.

Damn. Since most of the fights play out similarly, I never noticed how intricate and unique the design is for each of the different Elden Ring dragons.

I like how you put the Midir laser beam attack in there. Truly the best dragon fight FromSoft has ever made. The music, the visuals, the mechanics of the fight (going for the head makes it more engaging). While Placidusax might have a more cinematic fight, it's not quite as fun, badass and engaging.

I've always preferred the two leg, two wing approach to Dragons because four legged dragons either look like dogs (like Midir) or cats (like Kalameet). Therefore, I think the best design is, weirdly enough, the Glintstone Dragons from Elden Ring. With that said, obviously, Midir has the best Dragon fight in any From Soft game.

I'm not picking and choosing my favourite definitions and being a hypocrite here. I'm just correcting you on your misinformation. You are the one who is trying to define them in such a way that aligns your preferences.

Going to taxonomy, yes, I meant cats as in felines. If you meant domestic cats, you could have specified. No, I am not suggesting orangutans are humans. Orangutans and humans refer to a genera, and you cannot be two genera at once. A better comparison would be how humans are apes, or how birds are dinosaurs, because those are actually accurate statements, and better demonstrates how taxonomic categories can be ranked. You can do the same with dragons. You can divide them up into your Archetypal Western Dragons, as well as Wyverns, Wyrms, Zilants, Phaya Naks, Loongs etc. Nothing wrong with doing so.

I'll do the work for you. So, I said there are plenty of medieval era books, codices, and tapestries that depict dragons in all sorts of different forms, and it seems you just dismissed them. I had hoped you would at least try to do a little research, before trying to get back to me. For historical examples of dragons with a Wyvern body plan, we have a depiction in "Prayer to the Virgin", a manuscript published in Verona, Italy, circa 1270 AD. It has a depiction of "St George and the Dragon", and what do you know, the dragon has two wings and two legs, like a Wyvern. The word "draconis", which is Latin for dragon, is frequently used to refer to it. In "Historia de Proelis", published in France, circa 1420 AD. It has depictions of Alexander the Great and his army battling dragons, who again have two wings and two legs. A woodcut by Olaus Magnus published in Rome, 1500 AD, depicts King Harald fighting a wyvern-style dragon. A caption reads "De pugna Haraldi Regis contra draconem domeficum", which translates to "The battle with King Harald against the pet dragon". It should be noted by the way, that the term "Wyvern" wasn't coined until the 16th Century, and was only really used in England. As far as we know, the word was intended for heraldic purposes, to better organise heraldic symbols. So any of the pre-16th Century examples are, and can only be, dragons. You can retroactively call them wyverns, but what ever the case may be, the artists who painted these creatures definitely considered them dragons.

The tangent about humans and cats was weird. Humans and cats are real life creatures, defined by the clades that they belong to. Dragons are not comparable in this manner. Dragons are fiction, and have always been arbitrarily defined. But I'll bite the bullet on this one. Yes, I'll still say Wyverns are dragons, in much the same manner Tigers are cats. The idea of "true" dragons is a Dungeons and Dragons invention created to distinguish similar types of creatures in that game. People did not call Wyverns dragons because the word became desensitised. They called them dragons, because they considered them dragons. Dragons are not typically defined by the number of limbs they have. Medieval depictions of dragons were not consistently depicted with four legs and two wings, and we still today don't consistently depict them as such.

As for this being an etymological fallacy. No it's not. I know I am bringing up historical context, but this isn't an etymological fallacy. For one, the fallacy refers to someone who holds one sole meaning as valid and holds other meanings as being invalid. That's not what I am doing. I am doing the opposite. I am upholding all meanings as valid, hence why I say a dragon is whatever the artist wants them to be. You also seem to think that there is a near universally agreed upon definition for that word, and that the current definition differs from a definition that was used in an earlier historical time period. This is not the case. There isn't a universally agreed upon definition of "dragon". A dragon vaguely refers to large mythical reptilian beast that may or may not have wings and may or may not breath fire. It's an arbitrary category of creatures.

Also not all the creatures in elden are wyverns which shows you probably didn't see the video and/or haven't played elden ring to make this comment. In history, people depicted creatures loosely or strongly similar to dragons that it was easy for simplisty sake and translation of different languages to use the word dragon as a catch all term in the same way the word "devil" was later used for anything perceived as evil or bad, where in the case of the WORD dragon it became desensitized to mean the same thing as the word monster. That is a ambiguous term used to describe literally anything and thus no longer holds any weight or water when thrown out. It is often the proper victim of what the original use of etymology fallacy was, as well as misdirection in arguments. Which is why the term "true" dragon (key word there being true not "fact") and/or "proper" dragon is used when referring to the six limbed dragons.

Also the writers wrote than in lore for most of these, and in most of their games, with exceptions, these wyverns are not dragons so in some regard op is right.

This might sound redundant, but Midir reminds me more of a dinosaur than a dragon. Yes, one could say that dragons are basically fire-breathing dinosaurs, but in this case that similarity to a dinosaur makes me see it as an even more powerful being, more like a beast than a mythological being.

@Zion The Dragon It hasn't devolved. Throughout history it's been like that. For instance, kirin are called dragons, despite being closer to what we call an unicorn. Eastern dragons also don't fit the "true" category, but still call them dragons.

Greyoll is technically the biggest killable Dragon, but the corpse of the Ancient Dragon Gransax in the center of Lyndell is to date the biggest dragon From has ever made and even dwarfs the dead mountain dragon that’s from Dark Souls 3

@Highlander The deterioration and lack of heads can be attributed to combat, it's clear he lost some sort of battle; he has open wounds that almost look as if they are bleeding.

Wouldn't Midir similarly deteriorate as well? The abyss consumes all and such, you can just look at his wings to see that there is clear damage. Like I said, the timeless thing doesn't matter because if that were true then theoretically he shouldn't age at all, or age so fast he dies depending on how you want to take the stupid plot device that is time travel in ER

not sure about you guys. but midir was actually giving me a run for my money there, in terms of difficulty. if you ever played dark souls, you know that the dragon fights in elden ring are far more easier mainly because the camera work. as much as i loved midir boss fight, i hated how the camera always goes insane when im fighting him

One thing that I love about finding actual dragons in the souls games is that everyone one of them fights like there's no tomorrow, and the greatest example is midir... he's propably the last dragon in all the world, and he for sure ain't gonna go down without a fight
(I say actual dragons because all the other are wyvern, you can notice it by the fact that they don't have 4 arms plus wings)

They are using the modern word "wyvern" and "dragon," which yes those have no definition and can be used recklessly like they have over the years. And are used by many writers and "artists" to mean whatever they want, like how biological sex of humans works in whatever way the writer wants. They can also say humans are deformed apes and be just as valid.

Dragons are not really defined by the number of limbs they have. Most scholars on mythology and heraldry would consider a Wyvern to be a type of dragon, rather than something distinct from one. In terms of fantasy media, a dragon is whatever the writer or artist wants them to be. In the case Dark Souls, Wyverns and Drakes are considered to be lesser cousins of dragons, but still somewhat distinct from true dragons. In Elden Ring, there are the "New Dragons" of the Lands Between, and the "Ancient Dragons" of Farum Azula, the former has two legs and two wings, whereas the ladder has four legs and four wings, but they are both considered to be true dragons.
