The youngest of the five children of José Fares, Lebanese immigrant to Brazil, and Dona Francisca, Fagner was born in Fortaleza, the capital of the state of Ceará, although his birth was recorded in Orós.
At the age of five years he won a youth competition at a local radio station. As a teen, he formed vocal and instrumental groups and began to compose his own music. In 1968 he won the Festival de Música Popular do Ceará (Popular Music Festival of Ceará) with his song "Nada Sou" (I am Nothing).
In 1971 he moved to the capital Brasília, taking first place in the Festival de Música Popular do Centro de Estudos Universitários de Brasília (Popular Music Festival of the University Studies Center of Brasília) with his piece "Mucuripe" (with collaborator Belchior), which was later recorded by artist Elis Regina, and became Fagner's first notable success as a composer. He won prizes in other categories with additional pieces, as well.
He has had a distinguished career as a performer, singer, songwriter and composer for over 3 decades, and is also known for his collaborations with other MPB artists such as Caetano Veloso, Roberta Miranda, Chico Buarque and others.

Vem cantar
Pois meus olhos ficam querendo chorar
Deixa a mágoa pra depois
O amor é mais importante a dois
Vem amor
Vem cantar
Vem amor
Vem cantar
Pois meus olhos ficam querendo chorar
In Fagner's song "Sanfona Sentida," the lyrics convey a deep longing for love and a plea for it to come and fill the singer's heart. The repeated invitation for love to come and sing suggests that the singer's eyes are filled with tears, indicating a sense of sadness or longing. The line "Deixa a mágoa pra depois" (Leave the sorrow for later) suggests that the singer is willing to set aside their pain in favor of love, emphasizing the importance of experiencing love as a couple.
The phrase "Chora sanfona sentida em meu peito gemendo" (Cry, heartfelt accordion, lamenting in my chest) is a metaphorical representation of the singer's emotions. The melancholic sound of the accordion is compared to the pain and longing the singer feels in their heart. This pain inflicted by love is described as gradually causing the singer's love to die, reflecting the intensity of their emotions.
As the accordion's cry intensifies, the singer surrenders themselves completely to love, symbolized by the line "Quanto mais choras me entrego todinho ao amor" (The more you cry, the more I surrender completely to love). The singer is willing to endure the pain inflicted by love, making themselves vulnerable and fully committed to the experience. The reference to the accordion's cry disguising the singer's pain in their soul suggests that they find solace in the music and use it as a means to cope with their emotional turmoil.
The repetition of the invitation for love to come and sing reinforces the idea that love is more important than dwelling on past sorrows. The repeated phrase "O amor é mais importante a dois" (Love is more important as a couple) emphasizes the significance of love as a shared experience, suggesting that it is something that should be embraced and nurtured together. The song ends with the poignant declaration that the accordion's cry continues to inflict pain on the singer's heart, while their love forges on, ultimately accepting and finding solace in the interplay between love and sorrow.
