The youngest of the five children of José Fares, Lebanese immigrant to Brazil, and Dona Francisca, Fagner was born in Fortaleza, the capital of the state of Ceará, although his birth was recorded in Orós.
At the age of five years he won a youth competition at a local radio station. As a teen, he formed vocal and instrumental groups and began to compose his own music. In 1968 he won the Festival de Música Popular do Ceará (Popular Music Festival of Ceará) with his song "Nada Sou" (I am Nothing).
In 1971 he moved to the capital Brasília, taking first place in the Festival de Música Popular do Centro de Estudos Universitários de Brasília (Popular Music Festival of the University Studies Center of Brasília) with his piece "Mucuripe" (with collaborator Belchior), which was later recorded by artist Elis Regina, and became Fagner's first notable success as a composer. He won prizes in other categories with additional pieces, as well.
He has had a distinguished career as a performer, singer, songwriter and composer for over 3 decades, and is also known for his collaborations with other MPB artists such as Caetano Veloso, Roberta Miranda, Chico Buarque and others.

Lua nova no alto, que beleza
Céu de azul bem limpinho, é natureza
Em visão que tem muito de prazer
Mas o lindo pra mim é céu cinzento
Com carão entoando o seu refrão
Prenúncio que vem trazendo alento
Ver a terra rachada amolecendo
A terra, antes pobre, enriquecendo
O milho pro céu apontando
O feijão pelo chão enramando
E depois, pela safra, que alegria
Ver o povo todinho no vulcão
A negrada caindo na folia
Esquecendo das mágoas sem lundu
Belo é o Recife pegando fogo
Na pisada do maracatu
(Belo é o Recife pegando fogo)
(Na pisada do maracatu)
Belo é o Recife pegando fogo

Prenúncio que vem trazendo alento
Da chegada das chuvas no sertão
Ver a terra rachada amolecendo
A terra, antes pobre, enriquecendo
O milho pro céu apontando
O feijão pelo chão enramando

The lyrics to Fagner's song "Festa" describe the beauty and joy that comes with the arrival of rain in the dry region of Sertão, Brazil. The singer compares the typical colorful sights in nature like the red sun, the new moon, and the clear blue sky to the grey sky, which is even more beautiful to him. The grey sky signifies the advent of rain, which brings relief and prosperity to the arid land. The once poor and barren soil becomes rich and fertile, with corn growing towards the sky and beans spreading across the ground. The anticipation of a good harvest brings joy to the people, who come together to celebrate their abundance in a joyful "folia" or party.
The second part of the song shifts the focus to Recife, a city known for its vibrant cultural scenes and traditions. The singer highlights the beauty and excitement of Recife catching fire through the energetic rhythm of the "maracatu," a popular Brazilian music and dance style. The repetition of the lines "Belo é o Recife pegando fogo na pisada do maracatu" emphasizes the captivating and fiery nature of the city's cultural expression. The song celebrates the lively spirit and festivities of Recife, showcasing the diversity of beauty and joy found in different aspects of Brazilian culture.
Overall, "Festa" is a celebration of nature's cycles and the power of cultural expression to bring people together in joy and unity.
