Fairuz was born Nouhad Haddad in Jabal al Arz, Lebanon. She began her musical career as a teenager. From chorus girl at the Lebanese radio station in the late 1940s, to critical and popular acclaim from the 1950s to today, Fairuz is acknowledged not only for her musical talent and contribution, but also as a cultural and political icon. A symbol of a people, a heritage, a quest for peace, and of humanity. During most of her career, Fairuz reflected two other great artists, Assi and Mansour Rahbani. They wrote the lyrics and composed her tunes. Today, many of her songs reflect the composing talent of Ziad Rahbani who is Fairuz's son. Her songs testify to the Rahbani musical genius, as well as to Fairuz's broad musical background. Referred to as "The Soul of Lebanon" in the 1970s, Fairuz became a pre-eminent figure, a superstar of current music in the Arab world. Together, the Rahbani family is both a school of music and a cultural phenomenon.

Fairuz's song "Shalik Rafraf" is a nostalgic look back on childhood memories and simpler times. The lyrics were written and composed by the Rahbani brothers, and the song was released in 1962 as part of a musical play called "Petra". The song's title refers to a kite that is flying in the neighborhood on a windy day.
The song's opening line, "Shalik Rafraf b'al-hara 'al-nismeh shal," describes the movement of the kite as it flutters and dances in the wind over the rooftops of the neighborhood. The repetition of this phrase creates a sense of the kite's continuous movement, and the melody of the song reflects the kite's playful and carefree spirit.
The lyrics then go on to evoke memories of childhood games and pastimes, such as playing with marbles and tops, and picking flowers from a nearby garden. The mention of these innocent activities creates a sense of nostalgia and longing for a simpler time. The image of the children's games and the kite flying high in the sky above them also symbolizes a sense of freedom and possibility.
Overall, "Shalik Rafraf" is a beautiful representation of the way music can convey emotion and tell a story through both lyrics and melody. It captures a sense of joy, wonder, and freedom that is universal and timeless.
