Born in the Ivory Coast to Malian parents, Diawara moved to France to pursue acting, appearing in Cheikh Oumar Cissoko's 1999 feature film La Genèse, Dani Kouyaté's popular 2001 film Sia, le rêve du python, in the internationally renowned street theatre troupe Royal Deluxe, and played a leading role in the musical Kirikou et Karaba. She later took up the guitar and began composing her own material, writing songs that blend Wassalou traditions of Southern Mali with international influences. Noted for her distinct “sensuous voice,” she has performed and recorded with Oumou Sangaré, AfroCubism, Dee Dee Bridgewater (on Red Earth: A Malian Journey), and the Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou. Her new EP was released May 9, 2011 and her debut album Fatou with World Circuit Records was released in September 2011.

I understand why Murdocs sad, and it was more than just the boat trip.

The song and visuals represent the band not needing Murdoc to be with them anymore.
Murdoc is realizing this and hides in his box

Murdoc centered his whole life around this band, he has no other interests, (a good) family, or friendships outside of it

He literally sold his soul for these people, but then they realize they didn’t need him to begin with.

I love how in this song, the bass is quieter than other of Gorillaz's songs. I can still hear it, but compared to a song like Feel good inc. or Clint Eastwood, it's more subtle, letting other instruments shine for once. And that for the most part, the bass is low compared to the song in general. It's doing it's own thing while the other instruments do theirs.

Heya, I'm late to the party, I discovered the album only yesterday.

I don't know if anyone has said this before, but "désolé" ("sorry" in English) also means desolate/deserted/ravaged in French. Which means that "désolé" applies to 2D and Murdoc in more ways than you might think. 2D is sorry that things ended the way they did, he's also devastated by the abusive relationship he had with the bassist, but it's Murdoc who is deserted, isolated.

Interesting interpretation, I read a comment that had a slightly different interpretation, that the song is about Murdoc being sorry for all the pain he has caused the band, especially 2 D, which is why he is so sad and by himself, because he either apologized or feels too guilty to have fun with them. I kind of associated this song after that with all the people who have hurt me who never actually apologized for it telling me they are sorry, or rather than them telling me they are sorry, life itself apolozing on their behalf and wanting me to move on and heal and enjoy the catharsis of that heaking and the joy life has to offer after we heal from the wounds others inflict on us.

Because before Murdoc was like the head of the band with 2D, but now no one cares about him, including Noodle and Russel, especially after Murdoc went to jail and 2D moved on and made "Humility" by him self. Hints his eyes going from Black to White. 2D is a changed man now.... I mean lets be honest... the songs they've been making have been sounding waaaayyy better without Murdoc. Critical-RAGE, I agree. The band seems so much happier without Murdoc. Like, let’s compare Desole with Momentary bliss. Momentary bliss is a heart racing pumping song whereas Desole is more calm and kinda chill (which I guess many people like). Murdoc was is Momentary bliss and he wasn’t really involved in Desole reflecting the two different sides of the song. Murdoc is kinda like the minor and 2D is the major. Correct me if I’m wrong.

So my friend found out why possibly murdoc was crying: Everyone probably thinks this is what happened but like
When Murdoc woke up, everyone was already heading outside. Boyo walked downstairs and when he creeped into the hall, the door was closing. This is because 2D was going downstairs. 2D then went outside, and Murdoc was downstairs just as soon as the door was closing. The green boyo looked over just to realize he was hearing music. In the video it shows him leaning against the door to listen and he hears the band playing without him. This is what gets the him. The guy pretty much made the band and now they're going off making music without him. It upsets him and he may start to believe that the band doesn't want him or he feels that he's not needed and the band can manage without him. After all, he was gone for the entire album The Now Now since he was in jail, and they managed fine with a replacement. So this is what pushes him to the edge and he starts to cry but shortly after closes himself back out from the world by going back in the case)

its sad but also real. he put it all out for the band....but he also punished people a lot for not being what HE wanted. he didnt realize it was a two way street until he got kicked out of the car and took an outside view. and now that he has that perspective and now that hes back he realizes the bed hes made and the bed he has to sleep in. hopefully with time he will come to understand they arent pushing him out.....but they also arent his to control anymore, they've built their lives since his exile and now hes gotta built to stand back at the same level with them. its why good ol Ace takes the appearance of one of the vast monsters in the sky after his epiphany. he realizes that there are people who made such a massive impact on the rest of the group by simply just being there to help. simply giving them what they need without being toxic....and now until hes ready to get out of that box he has to work on himself

Theory: Murdoc is crying because he realizes the band doesn't need him to make music. I wouldn't really connect heavily to 2d. Everyone says that, but it's probably more with the fact that he controlled most of the band and its decisions (when it came to music at the least) at almost everytime. Even when he was in jail--Ace was a good friend and he told him to. Now he feels as if they don't need him and honestly a deeper thought without the band he's nothing.
