Stop And Stare
Fenech-Soler Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I see you there,
Like a light in the sky
Don't give up,
And I'll fight
If you show me a sign

The monkeys in exile,
They're screaming because they know it's time
The city it sleeps,
Not knowing the reason why

We stop and stare,
'Cause we don't know where we're going
I see the stars on the horizon
I told a lie

I see you there like a light in the sky,
Don't give up,
And I'll fight
If you show me a sign

The world fills with darkness
No power line, no reason to shine
We'll sail off this ocean
And search out the reason why

We stop and stare,
'cause we don't know where we're going
We brave the cold,
We try to hide our fear

We stop and stare,
'Cause we don't know where we're going
I see the stars on the horizon
I told a lie

All I see is the flashing of lights,
I need to feel the heat,
Don't give up the fight
I see your pain is rough,
You're burning so bright

The castle sleeps,
The arches take aim
I feel the fire,
do you feel it the same?
All I see is the flashing of lights tonight

We stop and stare,
'Cause we don't know where we're going
I see the stars on the horizon
I told a lie

We stop and stare,
'Cause we don't know where we're going
We brave the cold,
we try to hide our fear

We stop and stare,
'Cause we don't know where we're going

I see the stars on the horizon
I told a lie

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Fenech-Soler's song "Stop And Stare" are open to interpretation, but appear to paint a picture of a person or a group of people lost and uncertain about their direction in life. The opening lines describe seeing someone or something like a "light in the sky," perhaps a beacon of hope or a source of inspiration. The singer offers to fight and not give up if given a sign, showing a willingness to persevere and overcome challenges.

The next lines reference "monkeys in exile," which may be a metaphor for people who are trapped in their circumstances or feeling stuck in some way. The city is sleeping and unaware of the reason why, perhaps indicating a sense of detachment from the world around them. The chorus repeats the phrase "we stop and stare" several times, emphasizing the theme of uncertainty and indecision.

The song also reflects on a world that is filling with darkness, both literally and metaphorically. There is no power line or reason to shine, suggesting a lack of hope or purpose. The singer and the listener are encouraged to sail off this "ocean" and search for the reason why, a call to action to seek answers and find a way forward.

Overall, "Stop And Stare" is a haunting and introspective song that asks the listener to confront their doubts and fears, but also offers hope and support in the face of uncertainty.

Went all the way through my nearly 600 favorites today and rediscovered this gem. I remember being super hype about finding this before it "blows up", kind of sad to see that it never really did. Stellar track nonetheless.
