Sallys Song
Fiona Apple Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I sense there's something in the wind
That feels like tragedy's at hand
And though I'd like to stand by him
Can't shake this feeling that I have
The worst is just around the bend

And does he notice my feelings for him?
And will he see how much he means to me?
I think it's not to be

What will become of my dear friend?
Where will his actions lead us then?
Although I'd like to join the crowd
In their enthusiastic cloud
Try as I may, it doesn't last

And will we ever end up together?

no, I think not, it's never to become
For I am not the one.

Overall Meaning

In Fiona Apple's song "Sally's Song," the lyrics convey a sense of foreboding and longing. Sally, the singer, suspects that tragedy is imminent and feels compelled to be there for someone she cares about. However, she harbors doubts about her ability to truly stand by him, a nagging feeling that the worst is yet to come.

Sally wonders if this person she cares for, likely Jack Skellington from Tim Burton's "The Nightmare Before Christmas," is aware of her feelings towards him. She hopes that he will recognize the depth of her affection, but she ultimately believes that their relationship is not meant to be. Sally questions what lies ahead for her dear friend and the consequences of his actions. She contemplates joining the crowd that enthusiastically embraces life, but she feels it's futile, as the joyous moments never endure.

The last lines of the song convey Sally's resignation that they will never be together. She realizes that she is not the chosen one for the person she cares about and accepts that their paths will not intersect romantically.

Idk how they expect me to complete my Fiona apple playlist when this isn’t on Apple Music or sootify

I can't explain it, but there's such an astonishing degree of awareness in Fiona Apple's harmonic/instrument decisions. The lyrics anxiously jerk between innocent yearning and distracted apprehension, and she's crystallized it perfectly without being predictable. Dismal and sweet, this version takes the cake for me!

You explained it 👌🏽

I like Fiona's version better than Amy Lee's because she sounds drunk and sings an octave lower....and it has that sexy violin riff at the end.
