Hardy signed her first contract with the record label Vogue in November 1961. In April 1962, shortly after finishing school, her first album, "Oh oh Chéri", appeared, with the title song written by Johnny Hallyday's writing duo. The flip side of the record, "Tous les garçons et les filles" became a huge success, which sold 2 million copies. She had long hair and usually wore jeans with a leather jacket, while accompanying her songs on the guitar.
She sang in English, Spanish, and German occasionally. In 1963, she represented Monaco in the Grand Prix d'Eurovision de la Chanson with "L'amour s'en va" and emerged in fifth place. In 1968, she received the Grand Prix du Disque Académie Charles Cros.
In 1981, she married her long-time companion Jacques Dutronc, with whom she had already had a son (Thomas Dutronc) in 1973. In May 2000, she had a comeback with the album "Clair Obscur". Her son played the guitar, and her husband sang the duet "Puisque vous partez en voyage". Iggy Pop and Etienne Daho participated, as well. She currently lives near Paris.
In 2006 she released a new duets album entitled "Parenthèses" which included a song with her son Thomas.
In 2021, Hardy announced that her health had worsened and that she would not be able to sing again owing to the effects of cancer therapy.

The lyrics of Je suis moi by Françoise Hardy reflect on living in a big and busy city where it is easy to feel lost and anonymous. The verses describe how the singer goes through the motions of everyday life without feeling particularly alive, as the city forces her to follow the frantic rhythm that it imposes. The streets and the city's monotony make her feel like she is no longer someone, and she loses herself in this anonymous life. However, the chorus brings a different perspective, as the singer declares that when she is with her lover, everything changes. With just one look, she feels alive again, as if it were the first time she had ever experienced anything. She can hear, sense and see everything vividly, and she becomes herself again, feeling like she has the world at her feet and the sky at her fingertips.
The song is a powerful reflection on how love can transform our lives and bring back a sense of purpose and identity, especially when we feel lost in the chaos of modern life. The lyrics suggest that even though we might feel insignificant and anonymous in the big city, our identity is never really lost. It just takes the right person to help us find it again. The song is a reminder that sometimes, all it takes is a glance, a touch, or a word to feel alive again and rediscover who we are.

Eu Sou Eu
TRADUÇÃO PARA O PORTUGUÊS
E na rua, estou me habituando
À não ter mais pessoas
Quase nenhuma pessoa
E a cidade, me força
À seguir o seu ritmo febril
O seu ritmo febril
Mas, quando nos encontrarmos
Quando ele voltar à noite
Só basta um olhar
E eu sou eu
Eu tenho o céu
Na ponta dos dedos
O mundo
Abaixo de mim
Como para
Em primeiro lugar
Eu sou eu
Eu ouço
Eu sinto e eu vejo
Eu sou eu
Como para
Em primeiro lugar
Eu sou eu
E a rua, me leva
Na sua vida monótona
Sua vida monótona
Na cidade, eu me perco
Eu me esqueço
Eu me abandono
Sim, eu me abandono
Mas, quando
Nos encontrarmos
Quando o céu
Retornar á noite
Só basta um olhar
E eu sou eu
Eu tenho o céu
Na ponta dos dedos
O mundo
Abaixo de mim
