Hardy signed her first contract with the record label Vogue in November 1961. In April 1962, shortly after finishing school, her first album, "Oh oh Chéri", appeared, with the title song written by Johnny Hallyday's writing duo. The flip side of the record, "Tous les garçons et les filles" became a huge success, which sold 2 million copies. She had long hair and usually wore jeans with a leather jacket, while accompanying her songs on the guitar.
She sang in English, Spanish, and German occasionally. In 1963, she represented Monaco in the Grand Prix d'Eurovision de la Chanson with "L'amour s'en va" and emerged in fifth place. In 1968, she received the Grand Prix du Disque Académie Charles Cros.
In 1981, she married her long-time companion Jacques Dutronc, with whom she had already had a son (Thomas Dutronc) in 1973. In May 2000, she had a comeback with the album "Clair Obscur". Her son played the guitar, and her husband sang the duet "Puisque vous partez en voyage". Iggy Pop and Etienne Daho participated, as well. She currently lives near Paris.
In 2006 she released a new duets album entitled "Parenthèses" which included a song with her son Thomas.
In 2021, Hardy announced that her health had worsened and that she would not be able to sing again owing to the effects of cancer therapy.

Han han, qu'on devienne grandes
The song "Nous Étions Amies" by Françoise Hardy is an emotionally charged ballad that delves into the intricacies of friendship and love. The song begins with the nostalgia of the friendship that once existed between the singer and the person being addressed. The lyrics indicate that the two of them used to share everything with each other, whether it be moments of joy or sorrow. The singer then laments how it should not have come to a point where things have changed, and that their friendship should have remained the way it was before. This perhaps implies a sense of betrayal, where the person being addressed has hurt the singer by taking away something that she loved the most.
The second verse takes a darker turn, where the singer talks about the loss that she feels since the person being addressed has left her. She can no longer feel joy in the way that she used to, and all happiness has left her heart. Furthermore, the singer also acknowledges that her own actions have led to the misery of the other person, and that perhaps it was not the right thing to do. The song then shifts towards a hopeful tone, as the singer yearns for the friendship that they once had. She is desperate to return to the way things were before, indicating a desire for reconciliation and forgiveness.
Overall, the song "Nous Étions Amies" offers a poignant reflection on the complexities of human relationships, and the pain that can arise when those relationships change or break down.
