Hardy signed her first contract with the record label Vogue in November 1961. In April 1962, shortly after finishing school, her first album, "Oh oh Chéri", appeared, with the title song written by Johnny Hallyday's writing duo. The flip side of the record, "Tous les garçons et les filles" became a huge success, which sold 2 million copies. She had long hair and usually wore jeans with a leather jacket, while accompanying her songs on the guitar.
She sang in English, Spanish, and German occasionally. In 1963, she represented Monaco in the Grand Prix d'Eurovision de la Chanson with "L'amour s'en va" and emerged in fifth place. In 1968, she received the Grand Prix du Disque Académie Charles Cros.
In 1981, she married her long-time companion Jacques Dutronc, with whom she had already had a son (Thomas Dutronc) in 1973. In May 2000, she had a comeback with the album "Clair Obscur". Her son played the guitar, and her husband sang the duet "Puisque vous partez en voyage". Iggy Pop and Etienne Daho participated, as well. She currently lives near Paris.
In 2006 she released a new duets album entitled "Parenthèses" which included a song with her son Thomas.
In 2021, Hardy announced that her health had worsened and that she would not be able to sing again owing to the effects of cancer therapy.
Sur Quel Volcan
Françoise Hardy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Dans cet espace en filigrane, verrai-je un morceau de votre âme ?
Sur quel volcan allons-nous danser, vous et moi ?
A quels dépens ? Qui va s'y brûler, vous ou moi ?
J'emprunte des passages condamnés où gronde un orage annoncé
Le feu qui couve et le scandale, bientôt détruiront votre bal
Sur quel volcan allons-nous danser, vous et moi ?
A quels dépens ? Qui va s'y brûler, vous ou moi ?
Les beautés qui se cachent sont celles auxquelles je m'attache
Sur quel volcan allons-nous danser, vous et moi ?
A quels dépens ? Car tout va brûler, brûle déjà.
In Françoise Hardy's song Sur Quel Volcan, the singer talks about taking paths and alleys and capturing messages and secrets. She wonders if in this filigree space, she will see a piece of someone's soul. She then asks questions about what volcano they will dance on and who will end up being burnt. The tone is mysterious and foreboding, with a sense of danger looming in the background.
As the song progresses, Hardy sings about taking passages that are condemned, where an announced storm is brewing. She mentions that the fire that is simmering and the upcoming scandal will soon destroy their ball, adding to the sense of foreboding. The singer seems to be questioning whether their dance on the volcano will be worth the risk and wonders who will ultimately be hurt in the process.
In the end, Hardy mentions that the hidden beauties are the ones that she attaches herself to. The song ends with the repeated question of on what volcano will they dance, and everything is already burning.
Overall, the lyrics of Sur Quel Volcan seem to be about taking risks and taking paths that could lead to destruction. The volcano is used as a metaphor for the danger and potential destruction that lies ahead. Despite the looming threat, Hardy seems to be drawn to the hidden beauties and is willing to take the risk, even if it means getting burnt in the process.
