Tu sei seduto in silenzio, io vivo con la mia voce.
Tu sei seduto comunque, dovunque, qualunque cosa fai.
dimmi come ti va e come ti addormenti.
Dimmi come ti va, come ti senti,
dimmi come ti va e come ti addormenti.
Dimmi come si sta, come ti senti,
se c'è qualcuno di cui ti penti o se va bene tutto così così com'è
Francesco De Gregori's "Vecchi amici" is a song about the divide between old friends who have gone separate ways. The lyrics describe one friend who sits in darkness and silence, while the other works in the light with his voice. The contrast between the two is stark and emphasizes their differing paths in life.
The first friend is depicted as a clean-cut young man with ears full of soap. He has lost his sense of right and wrong and doesn't understand the rules anymore. The second friend admonishes him for this, warning him that he will find himself lost and alone if he continues down this path.
Throughout the song, the two friends reminisce about the past when their friendship was strong and they were united in their beliefs. But now, the first friend is everywhere and nowhere at the same time, while the second is steadfast in his convictions.
The chorus asks the first friend how he's doing, how he feels, and if there's anyone he regrets being involved with, hinting at a desire to reconnect with him. But in the end, the divide between them seems too great, and the second friend concludes that it's best to leave things as they are.
Overall, "Vecchi amici" is a poignant, nostalgic song that captures the complexity of friendship and the pain of growing apart. It's a reminder that even the strongest bonds can fray over time, but the memories of those bonds continue to linger on.
