Bambini venite parvulos

Gli elementi a disposizione non consentono analisi,
e i professori dell'altro ieri stanno affrettandosi a cambiare altare.
venuto a prendere perline e a regalare crack.
Sabbia sulle autostrade, ruggine sulle unghie,
mille dollari i vostri occhi, i vostri occhi senza dolore.
Bambini venite parvulos, sangue sotto al sole.
The lyrics of Francesco De Gregori's song "Bambini venite parvulos" are a scathing critique of society, specifically of the corruption and degradation that he perceives in the world around him. The opening lines, "Nessun calcolo ha nessun senso dietro questa paralisi / Gli elementi a disposizione non consentono analisi," express a sense of hopelessness and helplessness in the face of what seems like an immutable malaise. De Gregori seems to be saying that there's no point in trying to make sense of what's going on, because the "elements" that make up our society are too complex and too corrupt for any sort of analysis to be effective.
De Gregori goes on to describe a society in which the "professors dell'altro ieri stanno affrettandosi a cambiare altare," or the experts of yesterday are rushing to change course. These experts, De Gregori seems to suggest, are either complicit in the corruption or simply powerless to do anything about it. He sings that "legalizzare la mafia sarà la regola del duemila" (legalizing the mafia will be the rule of the year 2000), which highlights just how deep and pervasive the corruption is. The only way to get ahead, it seems, is to play by the corrupt system's rules. However, De Gregori also suggests that there is still hope. He sings that "Bambini venite parvulos, c'è un'ancora da tirare / Issa dal nero del mare, dal profondo del nero del mare," which translates to "Children come, there's an anchor to be pulled / Raise it from the black of the sea, from the depths of the black of the sea." This seems to suggest that there is still a way out of the darkness, but it will require the innocence and idealism of the younger generation to find and pull that anchor.
