He is considered one of the most original personalities in Italian music from the 1970s to now. Battiato's songs are dreamy, controversial collages of images and sensations, very experimental and convoluted, rich of esoteric, philosophical and East Asian religious themes.
His collaborations (from 1994 onward) with the nihilistic-cynical philosopher Manlio Sgalambro have added further depth to his apparently nonsensical lyrics, with references to Emil Cioran, Friedrich Nietzsche and other anarchistic and problematic thinkers.

Siete come sabbie mobili tirate giù uh
A Beethoven e Sinatra preferisco l'insalata
A Vivaldi l'uva passa che mi dà più calorie
Uh com'è difficile restare calmi e indifferenti mentre tutti intorno fanno rumore
In quest'epoca di pazzi ci mancavano gli idioti dell'orrore
Ho sentito degli spari in una via del centro
Quante stupide galline che si azzuffano per niente
Minima immoralia
Minima immoralia
E sommersi soprattutto da immondizie musicali
Sul ponte sventola bandiera bianca
Sul ponte sventola bandiera bianca
Sul ponte sventola bandiera bianca
Sul ponte sventola bandiera bianca
Minima immoralia
Minima immoralia
Minima immoralia
Minima immoralia
The end my only friend (minima immoralia)
(Sul ponte sventola bandiera bianca)
This is the end my only friend (minima immoralia)
(Sul ponte sventola bandiera bianca)
(Sul ponte sventola bandiera bianca)
(Sul ponte sventola bandiera bianca)
(Sul ponte sventola bandiera bianca)
The end my only friend (minima immoralia)
(Sul ponte sventola bandiera bianca)

Minima immoralia
The song "Bandiera bianca" by Franco Battiato is a critique of modern society, its values, and its excesses. The song lyrics address a number of different issues, including materialism, consumerism, the media, politics, and the decline of cultural and moral values. The lines "Siamo figli delle stelle e pronipoti di sua maestà il denaro" ("We are children of the stars and great-grandchildren of his majesty, money") highlight the idea that human beings are obsessed with wealth and material success.
The chorus of the song is "Sul ponte sventola bandiera bianca" ("On the bridge, the white flag waves"), which is a reference to surrender and defeat. The white flag is a sign of peace and an admission of defeat, suggesting that society has failed to live up to its ideals and that it is time to give up and try something new. The lines "Minima immoralia" ("Minimal morality") also suggest that society has lost its way and is in need of a major shift in values.
Overall, "Bandiera bianca" is a pessimistic and critical song that paints a bleak picture of contemporary society. Battiato's lyrics convey a sense of frustration and disappointment with the world, while also pointing to the possibility of a better future.
