Françoise Hardy signed her first contract with the record label Vogue in November 1961. In April 1962, shortly after finishing school, her first record Oh Oh Chéri appeared, written by Johnny Hallyday's writing duo. Her own flip side of the record, "Tous Les Garçons Et Les Filles" became a success, riding the wave of Yé-yé music in France, with two million sales.
Hardy sang in French, English, Italian, Spanish, and German. In 1963 she came fifth for Monaco in the Eurovision Song Contest with "L'amour s'en va". In 1963, she was awarded the Grand Prix Du Disque of the Charles Cros Academy.
In 1981, she married her long-time companion Jacques Dutronc, with whom she had had a son, Thomas Dutronc, in 1973. In 1994, she collaborated with the British pop group Blur for their "La Comedie" version of To The End. In May 2000, she made a comeback with the album Clair Obscur. Her son played guitar and her husband sang the duet "Puisque Vous Partez En Voyage." Iggy Pop and Étienne Daho also took part. Hardy lives near Paris and Dutronc lives in Monticello, Corsica, although they remain a couple.[citation needed]
Je ne vous aime pas
Francoise Hardy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
un livre grand ouvert…
je me sens sur la défensive
transparente, linéaire…
je n'vous aime pas…
un zeste de bluff
suffit-il pour trouver vos clés…
quand on surfe
en voix off
à mes heures de lucidité
philosophe
The lyrics to Françoise Hardy's song Je ne vous aime pas convey an emotional state of being on the defensive and feeling transparent and vulnerable due to others' ability to read her like an open book. In the first stanza, she feels exposed and defenseless, and despite the appearance of being in control, she wants to distance herself from the person or people who can see through her. She then reveals her true feelings in the chorus, "Je n'vous aime pas," meaning "I don't love you," implying that the person who can read her is someone she does not want to love.
In the second verse, Hardy brings up the feeling of being lost and confused due to the person's ability to read her. She is looking for clues or some sort of confirmation of their feelings but the person remains ambiguous and non-committal. She ends the verse by saying that she is aware of their power over her and she does not like it. In the bridge, Hardy shifts from singing in first person to third person, observing herself as an outsider discussing what she would do if she were more lucid. She states that she would not give the person satisfaction, would keep her secrets to herself, and not be blinded by their power over her.
Overall, the song expresses a desire to be independent and not to be under someone else's control. The lyrics speak to the fears and struggles associated with being vulnerable and exposed, but the choruses, "Je n'vous aime pas," empower Hardy to create boundaries and distance from those who she doesn't want to become romantically involved with.
