We Are So Fragile
Gary Numan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We are so fragile
Advertising lies
That are whiter than yours
We are so fragile
They could give us a war
Just to keep us amused

We are so fragile
I could stay here inside
And say 'It's all been done'
We are so fragile
Just pretend I never tried
I'll leave up to you

We are still so young
And it must be wrong
But I'll do it all the same
We are really so shy
There's nothing I can do
Except believe in you

We could always go home
But everyone says
This is the place to be
We are so unnatural

But you wouldn't understand
You only deal with men

Overall Meaning

Gary Numan’s song “We Are So Fragile” is about the ways in which society is manipulated by those in power in order to maintain control. Numan sings about how we are susceptible to the lies of advertising, tricked into believing that their products and ideas will improve our lives. These lies are “whiter than yours,” implying that those in control have a better understanding of what we need and want than we do ourselves. The line “they could give us a war just to keep us amused” speaks to the idea that those in power can manipulate us into supporting violent conflicts in order to distract us from the issues that really matter.

The second verse is more introspective, with Numan questioning his own role in this system of control. He wonders if everything has already been done and what he can do now that hasn’t already been tried. He leaves it up to the listener to decide what actions they will take in the face of these challenges. The third verse speaks to the idea that, despite our fragility and susceptibility to manipulation, we are still young and have the power to make a difference. Numan sings about his own shyness and the feeling that there’s nothing he can do, but ultimately concludes that the only thing we can do is believe in each other.
