Throughout the 90's, Ghoulspoon forged its own path and gained a reputation and following in the SoCal area through hard work and regional touring with the likes of Incubus, Korn, 311, Deftones, No Doubt, Sublime, Kid Rock, System of a Down, Static-X, Sugar Ray, Foo Fighters, The Cult, Snot, Kottonmouth Kings, Powerman 5000, and (hed) pe among many others. The band earned a huge fan base and many accolades including handfulls of San Diego Music Awards nominations and 1 win for "Best Hard Rock/Metal Band" in 2001.
Over its career, Ghoulspoon released several demos and 3 albums - “To Serve Man (1993)”, “Medication (1996)”, and “Fever (1999)”, selling over 10,000 units without the help of a manager, booking agent, or major record label. After going through years of lineup changes and enough scandal and debauchery to fill a two part VH1 Special, the band changed a few members and was reborn as Divided by Zero in 2002.
Open Me Up

Open me up and see what's inside
I reckon that I'm wrecked
But I'm all right outside
I don't know what I'm tryin' to say
Or the way that I'm, like doin' it
Don't wanna ruin it
'cause I got an urge that's deep down in me
In that it's my enemy
Rippin' apart my will to do the right thing
And the look that I took to the show
Don't mean a thing
Did you ever see a victim?
Better yet, how 'bout a survivor
Try to give me hope
And make me wish I was alive or
Keep on comin' on
To the crack of, um, dawn
Stereotypical language has become an art form
That makes the four of us
Bringin' out the whores in us
Bein' too close
Makes me burn like Icarus
I know it don't rhyme
But when you're runnin' outta time
Anything less than the truth
Could be a crime
Open me up
Well open me up and lemme know what you find
You wanna be ahead
But you're a step and a half behind
The bottom to the top of the land is outta hand
But I'm still takin' it
Won't bother fakin' it
Back to the lecture about
Like, what I'm talkin' about
Outside lookin' inside out
Don't wanna hate you
Or even debate you
Just want you to see who you're livin' through
The lyrics to Ghoulspoon's song Open Me Up have a message that can be interpreted on different levels. Essentially, the track speaks about the inner struggles of a person and the external facade that they present to the world. The opening lines "Open me up and see what’s inside, I reckon that I’m wrecked, but I’m all right outside" express this duality. The singer is urging us to delve deeper and not take things at face value. To pay attention to the darkness that lies beneath the surface.
Later on, the lyrics talk about the battle between inner urges and doing the right thing. "It’s like a power surge, In that it’s my enemy, Rippin’ apart my will to do the right thing." The person is grappling with their inner demons and the constant struggle between good and evil, which is relatable to many individuals. They encourage listeners not to judge others based on appearances and don't take things at face value. The lyrics present a reminder that there's always more going on beneath the surface.
In conclusion, Ghoulspoon's Open Me Up song is an excellent example of introspective lyrics that make you think about life beyond what you see on the surface. The lyrics are subtle, and it takes time to decipher and understand their meaning. Still, the take-away message is clear: don't judge a book by its cover, and always look for the deeper truths.
