The amber shapes of sunset dance on the wall
I step outside no boat no sign of you there
In endlessness two world looking back at me now
Oh I've never seen the winter lights on the lake
I want to swim your silk black skin to the floor
The day you came they took your name they renounced
Took your right your life your heart can't wait forever
Oh I've never seen the winter lights on the lake
Oh I've never seen the winter lights on the lake
I want to swim your silk black skin to the floor
On lava moons a song of hooves playing
Alvar by Goldfrapp is a song that is filled with vivid imagery and emotions. The first verse sets the tone of the song with the melancholic line, "I felt it come a blade of autumn alive". The imagery of autumn here is used metaphorically to represent the end of something. The following line, "The amber shapes of sunset dance on the wall" paints a picture of a quiet, peaceful evening. The third line "I step outside no boat no sign of you there" suggests that the singer is looking for someone who is not present. In the last line, "In endlessness two world looking back at me now", the singer is left with an overwhelming sense of change and uncertainty.
The chorus goes, "Oh I've never seen the winter lights on the lake, I want to swim your silk black skin to the floor, On lava moons a song of hooves playing loud, The day you came they took your name they renounced, Took your right your life your heart can't wait forever". The first line refers to something that the singer has never seen before and the use of winter lights on the lake shows that it is something magical and special. The second line is extremely sensual and provocative, suggesting a passionate desire. The imagery of lava moons juxtaposed with the sound of hooves creates an otherworldly atmosphere. The last line suggests that the singer is consumed with a need to be with someone who has been taken away from them against their will, and the desperation is palpable.
In essence, Alvar is a song about longing and the need to be with someone that has been taken away from the singer. The song draws on rich imagery, metaphors, and powerful emotions to create a distinctive and memorable listening experience.
