They were successful from the beginning, with their 1981 single "Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl)" setting the stage for the breakthrough success of the album 'Pelican West' (1982). The single "Love Plus One" was even bigger than anything previous, and Haircut 100 seemed poised for stardom just as Heyward decided to seek a solo career. The remainder of the band tried to continue with the album 'Paint and Paint' (1984), with percussionist Mark Fox taking over Heyward's vocal duties, but they broke up soon after.
Although somewhat dismissed as a 'one hit wonder' due to the spread of blockbuster hit "Love Plus One", the band proved influential by the late 00s when new wave revivalist bands such as Vampire Weekend and No Kids emerged employing a similar style of preppy, afrobeat-like guitar pop.
Baked Bean
Haircut 100 Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
When I'm feeling there
Feathers in science time
Take that bean down
Dig it in to me
Be sensible
Weathers in science time
Be ten only
See you on my range
Cry big into
Be beneath the rays
Don't bring down
No
Being only ten
Is when life begins to grin
Being only ten
Is when life begins to grin
Being only ten
Is when life begins to ring
The lyrics to Haircut 100's song Baked Bean are peculiar and not the easiest to decipher. It seems that the song is about reminiscing on a simpler time in life, specifically childhood. The lyrics "How about the time when I'm feeling there?" and "Being only ten is when life begins to grin" suggest that the singer is thinking about their past and how carefree and joyful it was to be young. The mention of science class and "feathers in science time" could be a nod to the experiments and activities that were commonly done in these classes, possibly indicating that the singer misses that sense of wonder and excitement.
The phrase "Take that bean down, dig it into me" is interesting because it's unclear what it means. It could be interpreted as a metaphor for trying to hold on to a happy memory or feeling, or it could simply be an abstract phrase that doesn't have a clear meaning. Overall, the lyrics paint a vivid picture of someone feeling nostalgic for their past and the simpler times they experienced.

The guitar riffs are so very unique I have never heard anything like it before or after their music, and the way they incorporate the brass instruments is truly revolutionary for tools that predate the band members existence by hundreds to thousands of years
