Kunze was born on 30 November 1956 in the refugee camp Espelkamp near Minden. His family had been expelled from Guben (Niederlausitz, now partially Poland). His father, an officer for the Waffen-SS and long-time prisoner of war, had returned only in the same year.
In the 1980s, he rose to prominence as a singer. HRK, as he is often called, has also written books, and has translated musicals into German language.

Eher dafür was ich ließ
The lyrics to Heinz Rudolf Kunze's song "Dank" reflect a deep introspection and self-evaluation of the singer's actions and motivations. The song articulates a sense of humility and self-awareness, expressing that the singer doesn't seek gratitude for what they have done, but rather for who they were. The lyrics emphasize that the singer did not necessarily seek recognition for their achievements or conform to societal expectations, but rather found value in their integrity and uniqueness.
The opening lines, "Not for what I did / Rather for what I let go," suggest that the singer finds more significance in the things they didn't do or the opportunities they passed on. This could imply a sense of regret or the realization that some choices they made may have been more important than the actions they took. The lyrics continue to reject conventional measures of success, stating that it's not about what they achieved or what others said about them.
The second verse reveals a tendency for the singer to be verbose, expressing that they have said too much in the past. There is a recognition that silence may have been wiser, although they admit to rarely choosing that path. The lyrics then express a preference for sacrifice over material gain and flattery, suggesting that the singer values personal integrity and doing what is right, even if it is difficult.
The song also touches on feelings of regret and shame, expressing that the singer does not seek gratitude for their past mistakes but rather acknowledges the shame they feel. The lyrics reject the idea of gaining honor through dishonest means, as the singer believes that true recognition is earned organically. The final lines indicate a willingness to accept hope, even though it has the potential to consume the singer. Ultimately, the lyrics imply that the singer finds value in being true to themselves, even if they are considered peculiar by others.

Nicht für das was ich getan hab
Not for what I have done
Eher dafür was ich ließ
But rather for what I let go
Nicht für das was ich erreicht hab
Not for what I have achieved
Oder wie es draußen hieß
Or how it was perceived from outside
Nicht für das was ich gesagt hab
Not for what I have said
Ich hab viel zu viel gesagt
I have said way too much
Wenn ich schwieg dann war ich klüger
When I kept silent, I was wiser
Doch das hab ich kaum gewagt
But I hardly dared
Nicht für Geld und gute Worte
Not for money and kind words
Dann schon lieber für Verzicht
Rather for renunciation
Nicht für das was mir zu leicht fiel
Not for what came easy to me
Denn ich kannte meine Pflicht
For I knew my duty
Nicht für das was ich bereue
Not for what I regret
Aber sehr wohl für die Scham
But certainly for the shame
Nicht für Ruhm ganovenehre
Not for stolen glory
Weil die ganz von selber kam
As that came on its own
Nicht für das was ich versuchte
Not for what I attempted
Ich erwarte keinen Dank
I do not expect gratitude
Ich geb zu ich mach mir Hoffnung
I admit that I give myself hope
Und die macht mich noch ganz krank
And that still makes me sick
Nicht für das was ich getan hab
Not for what I have done
Wenn schon dann für was ich war
If at all, then for what I was
Ich war wild zu mir entschlossen
I was fiercely determined
Und ein bißchen sonderbar
And a bit peculiar

Ich könnt' mich schwarz ärgern, dass gerade dieses Lied auf der CD nicht mehr geht. Das nenn' ich zumindest noch große Musik. Der Wahnsinn.
