Hozier was born in Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland. His mother is the visual artist Raine Hozier-Byrne (who also designed his latest album cover). He began a degree in music at Trinity College, Dublin, but dropped out midway through his first year in order to record demos for Universal Music. While at Trinity, he became involved with the Trinity Orchestra. He was a member of Anúna from 2008 to 2012, and appears as a soloist on their 2012 release "Illumination" singing "La Chanson de Mardi Gras". He toured and sang with the group internationally including performances in Norway and the Netherlands.
In 2013, Hozier released the EP "Take Me to Church EP" (also containing "Like Real People Do", "Angel of Small Death and The Codeine Scene" and a live version of "Cherry Wine"), with the title track becoming his breakthrough single after it went viral on YouTube. It reached number one on the Irish iTunes singles chart and number two in the official chart on 25 October 2013.
Hozier followed up Take Me to Church with the new EP "From Eden EP" (also containing "Work Song", "Arsonist's Lullabye" and a live version of "To Be Alone"), and a number of festival tour dates and television appearances in the United States. Hozier released his self-titled album, "Hozier" on 19 September 2014. It had five singles including "Take Me to Church", "Work Song", and "From Eden", which were hits on his earlier EPs. On December 2014, it was announced that "Take Me to Church" was nominated at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards for Song of the Year in 2015.
In September 2018, he released an EP titled Nina Cried Power and featured the title track as a single, reaching number one on the Billboard Adult Alternative Songs chart. He released his second album, Wasteland, Baby! in March 2019, which debuted atop the Irish Albums Chart and the Billboard 200, and has since been certified gold in the U.S.

She's the giggle at a funeral
Knows everybody's disapproval
I should've worshipped her sooner
If the Heavens ever did speak
She is the last true mouthpiece
Every Sunday's getting more bleak
A fresh poison each week
My church offers no absolutes
She tells me 'worship in the bedroom'
The only heaven I'll be sent to
Is when I'm alone with you
I was born sick, but I love it
Command me to be well
Amen. Amen. Amen
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
If I'm a pagan of the good times
My lover's the sunlight
To keep the Goddess on my side
She demands a sacrifice
To drain the whole sea
Get something shiny
Something meaty for the main course
That's a fine looking high horse
What you got in the stable?
We've a lot of starving faithful
That looks tasty
That looks plenty
This is hungry work
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
No masters or kings when the ritual begins
There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin
In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene
Only then I am human
Only then I am clean
Amen. Amen.
Good God, let me give you my life
The lyrics of "Take me to Church" by Hozier are layered with themes and emotions. The song is a critique of organized religion and its harmful effects on society. The opening lines mention the singer's lover, who is the "giggle at a funeral" and knows "everybody's disapproval." This lover is symbolic of the singer's escape from organized religion, which is also looked down upon by society. The vocalist reminisces, regretting not worshipping his lover sooner. The reference to the "last true mouthpiece" suggests that the singer views himself and his partner as the only ones speaking the truth in the dizzying and manipulative arena that is the church.
Hozier delves into the hypocrisy of the church by stating, "My church offers no absolutes." This statement expresses how religion is unpredictable and that constantly changing rules and practices make it a dangerous entity. The singer's lover tells him to "worship in the bedroom" because organized religion offers no hope for them. The line "I was born sick, but I love it," refers to the belief that the church capitalizes on an individual's fear of mortality and persuades them that they need to submit themselves to the corrupt institution to be saved. Hozier's realization that he is powerless in the face of the aforementioned system prompts him to say, "Good God, let me give you my life," which could either be interpreted as a complete surrender to religion or an acceptance of one's fate.

It's not even about sexuality. Here is a direct quote so stop saying what you think it's about without researching.
Lyrically the song is one large metaphor comparing a lover to religion.
"Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life."
Speaking with The Irish Times, Hozier said about matters of the heart: "I found the experience of falling in love or being in love was a death, a death of everything. You kind of watch yourself die in a wonderful way, and you experience for the briefest moment – if you see yourself for a moment through their eyes – everything you believed about yourself gone. In a death-and-rebirth sense."

Jesus says to love everyone as your self and not to judge one another....
for God is Judge.....
if you say this song isnt Christian.....then that means you agree with the video and the Violent things they did to the guy?
ROMANS 14:10-23
10 But why do you judge your brother? Or why do you also look down on your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of God;
11 for it is written: “‘As I live,’ says Jehovah,* ‘to me every knee will bend down, and every tongue will make open acknowledgment to God.’”
12 So, then, each of us will render an account for himself to God.*
13 Therefore let us not be judging+ one another any longer, but rather make this YOUR decision, not to put before a brother a stumbling block or a cause for tripping.
14 I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is defiled in itself; only where a man considers something to be defiled, to him it is defiled.
15 For if because of food your brother is being grieved, you are no longer walking in accord with love. Do not by your food ruin that one for whom Christ died.
16 Do not, therefore, let the good YOU people do be spoken of with injury to YOU.
17 For the kingdom of God does not mean* eating and drinking, but [means]* righteousness and peace and joy with holy spirit.
18 For he who in this regard slaves for Christ is acceptable to God and has approval with men.
19 So, then, let us pursue the things making for peace and the things that are upbuilding to one another.
20 Stop tearing down the work of God just for the sake of food. True, all things are clean, but it is injurious to the man who with an occasion for stumbling eats.
21 It is well not to eat flesh or to drink wine or do anything over which your brother stumbles.
22 The faith that you have, have it in accord with yourself in the sight of God. Happy is the man that does not put himself on judgment by what he approves.
23 But if he has doubts, he is already condemned if he eats, because [he does] not [eat] out of faith. Indeed, everything that is not out of faith is sin.

@MomijiHyuga804
How did they react?
@Aya_Raad405
MomijiHyuga804 she airplanes the lyrics on the screen and once it got to the chorus she was like “hang on, I don’t understand this part.” Then the girl was like, it’s ok we’ll explain it at the end.” She told us to stop air playing before the song ended and then we had this whole debate about it putting out the wrong ideas on Catholics. And some girl was like “yeah, but half the people don’t even care about what the song is about, if it’s a good song then it doesn’t really matter.” Then the bell went.
