To Someone From A Warm Climate
Hozier Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A joy hard learned in winter was the warming of the bed
You'd shake for minutes there and move your legs
Wrap the blanket over you and keep your head within
Let your breath heat the air until you'd feel it getting thin

Uiscefhuaraithe
The feel of coldness only water brings
There are some things that no one teaches you, love
That come natural as a dream you didn't know that you were in

And, darling, all my dreaming
Is only put to shame
And, darling, all my dreaming
Has only been given a name
But it came easy, darling
As natural as another leg around you in the bed frame

In summer's heat, I learned to dread the coming of the night
The awful things we do to make the head go quiet
You'd press your body to the concrete when you were small
The rains of winter seemed to never leave the walls

Uiscefhuaraithe
The feel of coolness only water brings
There are some things that no one teaches you, love
That God in His awful wisdom just programs in

But, darling, all my dreaming
Is only put to shame
And, darling, all my dreaming
Has only been given a name
But it happened easy, darling
As natural as another leg around you in the bed

And I wish I could say
That the river of my arms have found the ocean
I wish I could say the cold lake water of my heart
Christ, it's boiling over

But it happened easy, darling
Natural as another leg around you in the bed frame

Overall Meaning

In "To Someone From A Warm Climate" by Hozier, the lyrics paint a vivid picture of contrasting experiences and emotions associated with different climates. The song begins by describing the joy and warmth found in winter, specifically in the comfort of the bed. The act of shaking and moving the legs, as well as wrapping oneself in a blanket, creates a sense of physical and emotional warmth. The lyrics suggest that this experience is appreciated even more by those who come from warmer climates and may not be accustomed to the harshness of winter. It highlights the idea that sometimes we can only appreciate the true beauty and comfort of something once we have experienced its opposite.

The chorus introduces the word "uiscefhuaraithe," which is an Irish term meaning "cold water." Here, it is used metaphorically to describe the feeling of coldness that only water can bring. This line emphasizes that there are certain experiences and lessons in life that cannot be taught or explained, but rather they are learned through personal encounters and discoveries. The song then delves into the concept of dreams and how they can often surpass reality. It suggests that dreams can be both comforting and disappointing, as they can either enlighten or challenge our perceptions of love and life.

The second verse continues the exploration of contrasting experiences, focusing on the dread of summer nights and the actions we take to quiet our minds. The lyrics compare the act of pressing one's body to cold concrete as a small child to the relentless rains of winter that seem to perpetually dampen the walls. This juxtaposition highlights the discomfort and unease associated with both extreme heat and cold.

The final verse expresses a wish for the transformation and evolution of emotions. The singer longs to say that their arms have found the ocean, indicating a desire to be free and immersed in a vast and deep expanse of love and understanding. However, they acknowledge that their heart, represented by a cold lake, is boiling over, suggesting inner turmoil and conflicting emotions.

Overall, the song explores the themes of contrasting experiences, the learning process of life, the power of dreams, and the complexities of love and emotions.

And darlin', all my dreamin'
Has only been given a name
But it came easy, darlin'
As natural as another leg around you in the bed frame
In summer's heat, I learned to dread, the comin' of the night
The awful things we do to make the head go quiet
You'd press your body to the concrete when you were small
The rains of winter seemed to never leave the walls
"Uiscefhuaraithe"
The feel of coolness only water brings
There are some things that no one teaches you, love
That God in his awful wisdom first programs in
But darlin', all my dreamin'
Is only been put to shame
And darlin', all my dreamin'
Has only been given a name
But it happened easy, darlin'
As natural as another leg around you in the bed

Andrew played it for the first time, live, in Toronto in May. He explained the song, which broke my heart, but I think it is beautiful!
