Incubus is a five-man alternative rock band formed in 1991, based in Calabasas, California. Members include Brandon Boyd (vocals and percussion), Mike Einziger (guitar), Ben Kenney (bass), Jose Pasillas II (drums) and DJ Chris Kilmore (turntables). Former members of the band include Gavin Koppel (a.k.a. DJ Lyfe) (turntables) and Alex Katunich (a.k.a. Dirk Lance) (bass). The band's name may seem a peculiar choice to fans, as an incubus is a type of demon that, in mythological lore, comes in the night and has sex with women while they are sleeping; it seduces them in their dreams The story behind the name is that the band needed to think of a name hours before their first show and, after a few failed choices, Mike looked in a dictionary and chose "Incubus" almost at random. Mike says that the name was chosen because it sounded silly; Brandon holds that it was chosen because they were teenagers and the definition had the word "sex" in it. "We really didn't want to rape women in their sleep. But, we were fifteen and it seemed harmless to us then, and we never changed it," says the band.
Incubus has received both critical acclaim and commercial success, reaching multi-platinum sales, as well as releasing several successful singles. The band earned mainstream recognition with the release of their 1999 album Make Yourself. In 2001, Incubus became even more successful with the single "Drive" and their follow-up album Morning View. Their sixth studio album, Light Grenades, debuted at No. 1 in 2006 and has received Gold certification in the U.S. Incubus released their first greatest hits album Monuments and Melodies in June 2009, accompanied by a tour of the United States, Japan and Canada. The band's most recent album, 8, was released on April 21st, 2017.

Pillow Your Eyes
Incubus Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Chose your words "hey mom I want to be..."
So, study hard. Your work became your cell.
Don't you dare inhale, or you'll be damned to hell! No!
Yes, back and in your prime and things are in a swirl.
Solaced with your choice, out pops a baby girl!
Family now complete, and power's in your hands.
You've won the greatest prize, it's time to take a stand.
You think the kill weeds chompin' at your noodles flow.
There's somethin about the herb, so fast, hypnotize.
A ripened head change that'll pillow your eyes.
Will you be the superman inflicting drastic change?
The power of your name has spanded out a boundless range.
Will you meet the needs of a fast paced, awkward, life-span I call "we"?
Our trust is now within you.
So by soul cries let it be.
Pillow your eyes!
Yes, I, praise Jah!
The lyrics to Incubus's "Pillow Your Eyes" tell the story of a young person who chose to study hard and obey their parents' wishes to become successful. However, this success comes at a cost- the singer is only able to succeed by caging themselves in their work and not allowing themselves to experience life. They are warned against the pleasures of the world, such as drugs, and only focus on their career. The song takes a turn when the singer has a child and feels that they have "won the greatest prize" and are now in "power's hands." However, at the end of the song, the singer is encouraged to let go and "pillow their eyes" - to relax and enjoy the pleasures of life.
The song is a commentary on the pressures of society to constantly strive for success and how this can lead to a life without true fulfilment or happiness. The verses describe the sacrifices made in order to succeed, while the chorus urges the listener to take a step back from this lifestyle and enjoy the little things in life.
Overall, "Pillow Your Eyes" is a call for balance, encouraging the listener to not lose themselves in the pursuit of success and to find joy in the present moment.
