Overlords of Chaos
Ironsword Lyrics

Beneath the azure sea
We've passed the gateways of slumber
Our final destiny
Dead but dreaming
The old one waits for a sign
From his dwelling in R'lyeh
Times of despair, times of turmoil
Yet loathsome forms beyond uncoil
Forsaken hope, forsaken kind
Madness shall wreck the mortal mind
No gods left to bow before
They sleep now forevermore
Before mankind lays waste once more
The old ones will stride to the shore
Overlords of chaos
Overlords of chaos
Prepare to perish, prepare to strive
As unknown nightmares come alive
Forget the glory, forget the pride
And honour is but to survive
Temples and altars crumbled to dust
The lyrics of bards are flecked with rust
Fading away echoes of their rhyme
Their magic forever engulfed by time
Empires rise, empires fall
From high thrones man craved it all
Battles won, battles lost
All the conquests have their cost
The lyrics to Ironsword's song Overlords of Chaos are a distillation of the themes of Lovecraftian horror, an aesthetic based on the works of horror author H.P. Lovecraft. The song speaks of a world that has been laid waste by the Old Ones, eldritch beings of unspeakable power and malevolence, who sleep in eternal slumber beneath the earth and sea. The Old Ones are waiting for the right time to awaken, and when they do, they will bring madness and destruction to the world of man. The lyrics are filled with stark and vivid images of these beings and the world they inhabit, and the tone is one of fatalistic doom.
The lyrics describe a world in turmoil, a world that has been forsaken by the gods and is now at the mercy of the Old Ones. The people of the world are preparing to fight for their survival, but they know that they are no match for the power of the Old Ones. The lyrics are filled with allusions to Lovecraft's stories and themes, such as the crumbling temples and altars, the magic being engulfed by time, and the fading echoes of bards' rhymes. The tone is one of resignation and despair, as the inevitability of the Old Ones' rise becomes increasingly clear.
