Kashmir
Jeff Buckley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, let the sun beat down upon my face
Stars to fill my dream
I am a traveler of both time and space
To be where I have been
To sit with Elders of the gentle race
This world has seldom seen
They talk of days for which they sit and wait
And all will be revealed

Overall Meaning

The first two lines of these lyrics suggest a desire for openness, for warmth, for light. The phrase “let the sun beat down upon my face” evokes a sense of surrender to the elements, a willingness to be vulnerable, exposed. This is followed by a somewhat cryptic line about stars in dreams – perhaps a symbol of aspirations or visions of the future. The next two lines reveal something of the singer’s identity – a traveler of both time and space – and hint at a sense of displacement, of not quite feeling at home in any one place. The third line introduces the “Elders of the gentle race,” a phrase that seems to blur the boundary between the imagined and the real. Who are these “Elders”? What is the “gentle race”? Without knowing the context of the song, it is hard to say. However, the fourth line suggests a sense of reverence, of being in the presence of something special, something rare.

The final two lines of the verse turn towards the future, and hint at a sense of anticipation – “days for which they sit and wait” – before ending on the tantalizing promise that “all will be revealed.” Together, these lyrics evoke a sense of yearning, of seeking, of being on the cusp of discovery. They suggest a deep need to connect – with ourselves, with others, with our sense of purpose in the world.
