Lullaby Yodel
Jimmie Rodgers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My baby I know that you want me
Each lonely night and day
Your dear blue eyes how they haunt me
Though you're far away

Oh why did she take you away from my arms
And leave nothing to cherish there
She's left me so blue but
When she took you too
It seemed more than I could bear

My baby I want you tonight dear
After my work is through
To rock you to sleep in my arms dear
And sing lullaby's to you

I dee-ho lay-ee
Oh dee oh dee-ee-ee lay oh-ee-ee
I dee lay dee-ho lay-ee
Dee oh dee oh lay-ee oh lay-ee
Dee oh dee oh lay-ee-ee oh lay-ee-ee

I dream of your baby caresses
Dimples and golden hair
I reach out to clasp you in my arms
And find only emptiness there

Your future has been the chief aim of my life
You'll never know what it means
My plans and my schemes are
All blasted it seems
For you are mine only in dreams

My baby I want you tonight dear
After my work is through
To rock you to sleep in my arms dear
And sing lullaby's to you

Oh dee lay-ee-I oh lay-ee oh oh lay-ee

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Jimmie Rodgers's song "Lullaby Yodel" express the longing and sadness of a parent who is separated from their baby. The singer addresses their baby directly, conveying their deep yearning for them. The first verse speaks to the constant presence of the baby in the singer's mind, as their "dear blue eyes" haunt them even though they are far away. The second verse reflects on the pain of the separation, questioning why someone would take the baby away and leave the singer feeling so blue. The anguish intensifies as the singer expresses their desire to be with the baby and sing lullabies to them, emphasizing the tender care and love they want to offer.

The song captures the universal emotion of longing and the innate human instinct to protect and nurture one's child. It explores the depth of the parent-child bond and the emptiness felt when that bond is disrupted. The yodeling in the chorus adds a unique touch, evoking a sense of nostalgia and traditional folk elements, which was characteristic of Rodgers's style.

My uncle Frank used to sing this, he loved all the old country and western songs. He taught me to play guitar and I, in turn, taught my children, Hank Williams was my favourite. Thanks for putting this on:-)

I was weaned on Jimmie Rodgers and Hank Williams. When my daughter was a baby, her mother lied about abuse and separated from me, taking my baby with her. Eventually I got custody every other weekend. I'd rock my precious little girl, sing her this song, and cry like a baby. God came through, though, and I have custody now! BTW Jimmie co-wrote this and other songs with his sister-in-law.
