They formed in 1979 after Vangelis had been rumoured to replace Rick Wakeman in Yes a few years before. Anderson had contributed to Vangelis' albums "Heaven and Hell", "See You Later" and "Opera Sauvage".
They released a total of four albums with Anderson writing the lyrics and Vangelis composing the music: "Short Stories" in 1980, "The Friends of Mr. Cairo" in 1981, "Private Collection" in 1983, and "Page of Life" in 1991, which got re-released in 1998 with some additional tracks of which Vangelis reportedly did not approve. There are also two compilations, called "The Best of Jon & Vangelis" (1984) and "Chronicles" (1994)

Oona-a-aya, tamara ooha, shana too aya, lay mi
Oona-a-aya, tamara ooha, shana too aya, lay mi
Oona-a-aya, tamara ooha, shana too aya, lay mi
Oona-a-aya, tamara ooha, shana too aya, lay mi
Coming through vision
Coming through wisdom
Giving me daytime
Giving this nighttime
Bringing within me, this love
Oona-a-aya, tamara ooha, shana too aya, lay mi
Oona-a-aya, tamara ooha, shana too aya, lay mi
Coming through wisdom
Coming through freedom
Coming together is love
Giving me daytime
Giving this nighttime
Bringing within me, this love
Giving me daytime
Giving this nighttime
Bringing within me, this love
Oona-a-aya, tamara ooha, shana too aya, lay mi
Oona-a-aya, tamara ooha, shana too aya, lay mi
(Oona-a-aya)
I'm talking to the sea
(Tamara ooha)
I'm singing to the stars
(Shana too aya)
Change we must
(Lay mi)
To live again
(Oona-a-aya)
Coming to the earth to the moon
(Tamara ooha)
I'm singing on the sky to the earth
(Shana too aya)
Change we must, change we must
(Lay mi) Live again
Oona-a-aya, tamara ooha, shana too aya, lay mi
Oona-a-aya, tamara ooha, shana too aya, lay mi
(Oona-a-aya)
We will witness this song, we will sing
(Tamara ooha)
We belong to the world
(Shana too aya)
Our Mother so Divine
(Lay mi)
We live again
(Oona-a-aya)
This is here, this is now giving time
(Tamara ooha)
This is love that surrounds
(Shana too aya)
Change we must
(Lay mi)
To live again
Oona-a-aya, tamara ooha, shana too aya, lay mi
Oona-a-aya, tamara ooha, shana too aya, lay mi
Oona-a-aya, tamara ooha, shana too aya, lay mi
A moment in love forever
Oona-a-aya, tamara ooha, shana too aya,
Shana too aya
Shana too aya, lay mi
The lyrics of "Change We Must" by Jon & Vangelis speak to the necessity of change for survival and rejuvenation. The repetition of "Oona-a-aya, tamara ooha, shana too aya, lay mi" creates a meditative chant-like quality, perhaps evoking the idea of a traditional tribal ritual to initiate change. The lines "Coming through vision, Coming through wisdom" and "Coming through freedom, Coming together is love" suggest an understanding that change can only occur when people are open to new ideas and work together for a common goal.
The singer speaks to the Earth, the Moon, and the Sky, as if energizing the elements around them to enact change. The repetition of "Giving me daytime, Giving this nighttime, Bringing within me, this love" implies that the change must start from within and reflect externally. The final lines "We belong to the world, Our Mother so Divine, We live again" point towards the interconnectedness of all beings, and how change is necessary for collective survival.
Overall, "Change We Must" is an invitation to embrace transformation, to let go of old paradigms, and to work together to create a better future.
