Be My Girl
Jonathan Jackson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I know it's wrong but I want you
Even if you can't tell
By the way that you're looking
I know you want me as well
And before the night's over
We both are gonna give in
So come a little bit closer
Where you and I can begin

Slowly

Oehhh fast, oehhh slow
Doesn't matter where, baby let's go
Oehhh fast, oehhh slow
Don't you wanna be my girl

You twirl your hair with your fingers
Girl I know what that means I see you there in the corner
You should be dancing with me
And before the night's over
We both are gonna give in
So come a little bit closer
Where you and I can begin

Slowly

Oehhh fast, oehhh slow
Doesn't matter where, baby let's go
Oehhh fast, oehhh slow
Don't you wanna be my girl

Slowly

Oehhh fast, oehhh slow
Doesn't matter where, baby let's go
Oehhh fast, oehhh slow

Don't you, don't you
Don't you wanna be my girl

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Be My Girl" by Jonathan Jackson and Sam Palladio express the desire of the singer to be with someone they know they shouldn't. The singer is well aware that the person they are interested in is also interested in them, despite what they may be saying or how they may be acting. The singer is trying to entice the person to give in to their attraction and move closer, where they can begin whatever it is that they both want. The lyrics are an invitation to dance and enjoy each other's company, even if it may be wrong.

The chorus of "Oehhh fast, oehhh slow" reinforces the idea that the physicality of their relationship doesn't matter, as long as they are together. The repetition of the chorus emphasizes the importance of the invitation for the other person to be the singer's girl. The colloquial "don't you wanna be my girl" is a lighthearted way of asking the question, while still conveying the message of wanting the other person to be with them.

Overall, the song is about the excitement of wanting someone and the temptation to give in to that desire, even if it may not be the wisest choice. The lyrics are catchy and playful, designed to make the listener feel like dancing and having fun with the idea of letting go and being with someone they shouldn't.

Here we are a few years later, and I have a couple of thoughts. One: I miss Chaley's voice on the show! She was something special. And two: The character growth of "Avery" is some of the best writing on the show! For someone who started as such a tool, to where he is now, and have it be believable? That is GREAT writing. And come on, can we just give Jonathan Jackson an Emmy now and get it over with?! So, so good.

I'll never understand how the Nashville version actually released omitted Chaley Rose's gorgeous vocal touch to it. Plus it was so good here with just two guitars and not the full production like on the album. I always have to come watch this clip to get my fix.
