Twist Of Barbwire

Said I'd love you 'til the far side of dawn
But in the morning if you must leave
Don't leave with your apologies
If you come back
If I liked you at all
Remember I liked you to fall on your knees
Thought your kind of love was just a thorn of the rose
Tried hard to be faithful
Not hard enough I suppose
Tried hard to drown with a hum and a drum
In a pretty drug slum mire tried bearing your sighs
And your sneers and your frown
Tried wearing your jewels and your heels and your crown
But it was nothing but a twist of barbwire
It was nothing but a twist of barbwire
It was nothing but a twist of barbwire
See I promise I'll be constantly clean
Did you think that I still say what I mean
Now you're keening and you have to decide
Will you open your legs or your eyes
Oh do you pray now 'cause I pray all the time
As the soul can't escape what the heart may disguise
Liar liar you're my last desire
Thought your kind of love was just a thorn of the rose
Tried hard to be faithful
Not hard enough I suppose
Tried hard to drown with a hum and a drum
In a pretty drug slum mire tried bearing your sighs
And your sneers and your frown
Tried wearing your jewels and your heels and your crown
But it was nothing but a twist of barbwire
It was nothing but a twist of barbwire
It was nothing but a twist of barbwire
In "Twist of Barbwire," Jonathan Jackson sings about a dysfunctional relationship that has fallen apart, with the lyrics speaking to the hurt and resentment that remains. The first stanza makes reference to the singer's promises of love and devotion, but warns of consequences if those promises are not kept. If the person leaves in the morning, they are told not to bother apologizing. However, if they return, the singer warns that they should not expect to be treated kindly. The line "Remember I liked you to fall on your knees" suggests that the singer enjoyed having power over their partner and wants to retain that power even if the relationship is over.
The second stanza begins with the singer accusing their partner of being deceitful, a "liar liar." They had hoped for love, but instead found only pain and trouble. The lines "Tried hard to be faithful / Not hard enough I suppose" suggest that both partners were struggling to keep the relationship together. However, the repeated line "It was nothing but a twist of barbwire" reveals the singer's bitterness and disappointment. The relationship was never as good as they hoped it would be and their partner was never what they seemed.

I kind of expected a much better song from Elvis Costello, but Johnathan is great nevertheless.
