How You Learn to Live Alone
Jonathan Jackson Lyrics

First you fall, then you fly
And you believe that you belong
Up in the sky.
Flap your arms, as you run,
Every revolution brings you closer to the sun.
You fall asleep in motion, in unchartered
Hemispheres,
And you wake up with the stars
Fallin' down around your ears.
And when they hit the ground,
They're nothin' but stones
That's how you learn to live alone.
That's how you learn to live alone.

Bit by bit, you slip away,
You lose yourself in pieces
By the things that you don't say.
You're not here, but you're still there
The sun goes up and the sun goes down,
But you're not sure you care.
You live inside the false,
Till you recognize the truth.
People send you pictures,
But you can't believe it's you.
Seems forever since your house
Has felt like home
That's how you learn to live alone
That's how you learn to live alone.

It don't feel right, but it's not wrong.
It's just hard to start again this far along.
Brick by brick, the letting go,
As you walk away from everything you know
When you release resistance
And you lean into the wind,
'Til the roof begins to crumble,
And the rain comes pourin' in,
And you sit there in the rubble,
Till the rubble feels like home
That's how you learn to live alone

That's how you learn to live alone
That's how you learn to live alone

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Jonathan Jackson's "How You Learn to Live Alone" speak plainly to the pain of heartbreak, loneliness, and the struggle to rebuild one's life afterward. The chorus, "That's how you learn to live alone," is a refrain that appears twice between two verses that sketch out the stages of healing. The first verse posits a metaphor of flight, in which falling and flapping one's arms brings one closer and closer to the sun until one experiences a kind of burn-out." You fall asleep in motion, in unchartered hemispheres, / And you wake up with the stars / Fallin' down around your ears. / And when they hit the ground, / They're nothin' but stones." The second verse continues with the idea of disconnection, "Bit by bit, you slip away, / You lose yourself in pieces / By the things that you don't say." Here the idea is that solitude can be a way of hiding from or burying one's true self.

The bridge seems to offer a response to the psychological factors that contribute to loneliness and difficulty in starting anew. "It don't feel right, but it's not wrong. / It's just hard to start again this far along. / Brick by brick, the letting go, / As you walk away from everything you know. / When you release resistance / And you lean into the wind, / 'Til the roof begins to crumble, / And the rain comes pourin' in."

It don't feel right, but it's not wrong. It's just hard to start again this far along.
Starting over can be challenging and uncomfortable, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's the wrong decision. It can be especially daunting after investing so much time and effort into something.

Brick by brick, the letting go, As you walk away from everything you know. When you release resistance And you lean into the wind,
To move on, you have to let go of the familiar piece by piece, gradually distancing yourself from what was once comfortable. It takes effort to not hold onto what's pulling you back and to let yourself be taken by the winds of life.

'Til the roof begins to crumble, And the rain comes pourin' in, And you sit there in the rubble, Till the rubble feels like home That's how you learn to live alone That's how you learn to live alone
When you have nothing left, and everything has been stripped away, you have no choice but to accept the situation you're in. At that point, despite whatever challenges arise, you've become so accustomed to being alone that it feels like a natural way of living.

I was away so just  got to watch Jonathan Jackson on Nashville...touched my heart an soul...I have been going through a separation/divorce for over a year (after 45 yrs of marriage) and this song tells it all. Love Nashville!!! Great show and music and I never was a country girl....

LOVE LOVE LOVE Jonathan Jackson's version of this song. Best Performance of the entire show last night! Haunting! Just loved it!

@aristasious

It just fucking sucks when you hear the lyrics & that hits you harder than a ton of bricks because those lyrics right there just speak louder by the second as he sings them. Deep inside, you know they relate to you too, that's what really hits me the most.

OMG just saw Nashville's Jonathan Jackson sing this on Live at the Grand Ole Opry.  Unbelievable performance.  I cried like a baby.

@AngelUg

I heard this song on VOA radio on a show called "Roots and branches" like 8 years ago. Been looking for it since. Thank goodness

@DippleDuck

Thank you, Jonathan Jackson!  Truly Inspired.  It will not be forgotten......

@2wendover

So touching, unforgettable.  My sister is a widow and I cried for her.  I'm an "elder" and this was perhaps the most incredible performance I've ever heard.  I hope Jonathan reads all these comments and learns how special he is.  Thanks, Jonathan.
